Six companies, including Dabur India and Ferns N Petals, have taken corrective action after receiving notices from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) over misleading labelling, claims and advertisements.
In a social media post, the food regulator said the concerned food business operators had rectified the violations flagged in the notices and taken the necessary corrective measures.
The companies include Lotte India Corporation Pvt Ltd, Dabur India, Ferns N Petals Pvt Ltd, Eat Better Ventures Pvt Ltd, S S Product Prop and Om Sai Healthcare.
“Following notices from FSSAI, major FBOs have taken prompt corrective actions. Measures range from withdrawing misleading label claims to revising product packaging to ensure consumer safety and compliance,” the regulator informs on social media.
In Dabur’s case, the FSSAI said the company was marketing an ayurvedic proprietary medicinal oil as an edible oil.
“Dabur has informed that the company has directed all e-commerce platforms to list the product under appropriate category of ayurvedic proprietary medicine and is in the process to list the product under appropriate category on its own website since the product will not fall under the purview of FSSAI,” the regulator said.
Lotte India has removed the “100 per cent” claims from its product labels following regulatory action.
Ferns N Petals, meanwhile, was found to have several labelling violations, according to the FSSAI. The regulator said its chocolate product contained hydrogenated vegetable fat instead of cocoa butter. Under the regulations, products containing vegetable fats in addition to cocoa butter are required to carry a bold declaration stating: “CONTAINS COCOA BUTTER EQUIVALENT / VEGETABLE FAT IN ADDITION TO COCOA BUTTER.”
The regulator also flagged the absence of percentage RDA values in the nutritional information table. Additionally, while the product was marketed as almond chocolate and featured images of almonds on the label, the percentage of mango used in the product was not declared in the ingredient list.
Ferns N Petals said it had taken corrective measures and rectified the labels of its other products, including Roasted Almond Chocolate, in line with the show cause notice.
Eat Better Ventures has removed comparative and vegan claims from its products, while Om Sai Healthcare is revising its marketing materials and website content. The company also assured the FSSAI that it would refrain from using misleading advertisements and claims in the future.
The FSSAI said the corrective actions reflect how regulatory oversight is driving greater accountability within the food industry.
