Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy chaired a key meeting to review the allocation of electric buses under the PM E-Drive scheme. As part of the initiative, approximately 10,900 electric buses will be distributed among four major states—Telangana, Karnataka, Delhi, and Gujarat—supporting the government’s mission for clean urban mobility.
According to the Ministry of Heavy Industries, Bengaluru will receive 4,500 buses, Hyderabad 2,000, Delhi 2,800, Ahmedabad 1,000, and Surat 600 in the current phase.
The PM E-Drive scheme aims to deploy a total of 14,028 electric buses over a two-year period from April 2024 to March 2026, with a financial outlay of ₹10,900 crore. This effort is recognized as one of the world’s largest public transport electrification initiatives.
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is taking strong steps toward clean and smart urban transport,” said Kumaraswamy. “Cities from Bengaluru to Delhi are adopting electric buses to make commuting greener and more efficient.”
He further emphasized, “We are not just allocating electric buses; we are shaping the future of India’s transport with innovation and environmental awareness. With strong coordination between the Centre and states, we are fully committed to fulfilling the promise of the PM E-Drive scheme.”
