A green solution

The franchising industry and market in India is known for its malleability. Hence, new and innovative products and services find it relatively easy to adjust. Many brands are reaping the benefits of this aspect of franchising in India

A green solution

Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for about 58% of India’s population. The gross value added by agriculture, forestry and fishing is estimated at Rs 17.67 trillion (USD 274.23 billion) in FY18. Portable farming only forms a small part of it. However, considering the current urban consumption patterns and changes, the contribution of portable farming as a solution for healthy products and environment is increasing. This has given way to a new opportunity in franchising.

One such company is The Living Greens Organics which provides portable farming solutions to individual and corporate clients. “We have two types of products – urban farming and vertical gardening. Both are a smart way to have self-sustaining production of agricultural products for mostly household consumption. Vertical gardening is also used for green wall living billboards, logos, etc. The scope is limitless,” says Prateek Tiwari, CEO, Living Greens. Post its initial funding from the Silicon Valley, the company started its business in Jaipur. Now it has clients all over the country.

Growth Through Franchising

“The reason for us to venture into franchising is that we have had enquiries from all around the country. Even Tier II cities like Agra have shown a lot of interest. Besides, there has been a lot of interest shown even from the government. One way for cities to be smart is by being self-sustaining. It’s not just about production; the indoors become cooler and even energy consumption becomes less. This is what interests the government at this moment. With the ‘Smart Cities’ plan in full motion, I can see our products and services fit in just about right,” Tiwari says, while commenting on the prospects of franchising for the brand.

Aquaponics is another brand in the field which provides modern technology to integrate aquaculture, agriculture and hydroponic technologies for growing organic food in a limited space. Says CEO Saravanan A K: “We have had enquiries from all over the country and franchising may be one of the ways for us to reach them.” The industry may still be in the process of finding its place but enquiry data suggests that the future is quite promising. With the emergence of smart cities and industrial advancements as a result of government initiatives, the industry is set to grow at the rate of 300% by 2022. And franchising is expected to play a major role in this rapid growth.
