Vishal Mega Mart’s shares climbed 6.76% to Rs 110.60 after the company’s board approved the reappointment of Gunender Kapur as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer for another five-year term, effective from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2031.
As part of the decision, Kapur has also been redesignated as founder, managing director and chief executive officer of the company.
Kapur had initially been appointed MD and CEO for a three-year term beginning 27 June 2024, with his current tenure scheduled to end on 26 June 2027.
With more than 42 years of experience across the consumer and retail sectors, Kapur holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering with honours from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science and an MBA from the University of Delhi. His previous associations include Hindustan Lever, Unilever Nigeria PLC, Reliance Industries and TPG Capital.
Vishal Mega Mart operates across three key categories: apparel, general merchandise and FMCG. As of 30 June 2026, the retailer had 819 stores across 559 cities in 28 states and two Union territories, supported by its mobile application and website.
The company also delivered strong financial performance in the first quarter of FY27. Consolidated net profit rose 25.57% year on year to Rs 258.77 crore, compared with Rs 206.07 crore in Q1 FY26. Net sales increased 18.68% year on year to Rs 3,727.01 crore during the quarter.
