Global auto giant Stellantis is all set to bring Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Leapmotor to the Indian market. Stellantis already operates in India through its Jeep and Citroën brands.
Shailesh Hazela, CEO and MD of Stellantis India, stated that India is a strategically important market with growing demand for electric vehicles.
Founded in 2015, Leapmotor currently offers four EV models, with starting prices around ₹15 lakh (approximately $17,800). In 2024, the company sold nearly 294,000 vehicles, holding a 2.5% market share in China.
While Stellantis hasn't confirmed an exact launch timeline, it had previously planned to begin Leapmotor sales in late 2024. The delay in rollout has not yet been explained.
Initially, Leapmotor vehicles will be sold in India via the fully imported route, with plans to begin local assembly in the future.
India is part of Leapmotor's second phase of global expansion, following its entry into Europe, South America, Australia, and New Zealand.
Stellantis already has a manufacturing presence in India, operating three plants in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, along with two R&D centers in Chennai and Pune.
Despite a modest 0.2% market share in India as of FY25, Stellantis aims to strengthen its presence through EVs. India’s passenger EV market crossed 100,000 units in sales in FY25, signaling rising consumer interest in electric mobility.
