EV Boost: Mahindra’s New Battery Meets Global Safety Standards
Mahindra and German firm FEV have jointly developed a high energy density LFP battery for Mahindra’s Electric Origin SUVs, featuring fast charging from 20% to 80% in just 20 minutes.

Mahindra & Mahindra and German engineering leader FEV have jointly developed an advanced lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery system tailored for Mahindra’s upcoming Electric Origin SUV lineup. The system is available in two variants — 59 kWh and 79 kWh — and is the result of a two-year intensive collaboration between the two companies.

Built with safety and efficiency in mind, the battery has successfully passed rigorous global safety tests including fuel fire, nail penetration, and rollover simulations. One of the key features is its ultra-fast charging capability, allowing 20–80% charging in just 20 minutes.

The battery underwent comprehensive testing at both Mahindra’s R&D facilities and FEV’s eDLP facility near Leipzig, Germany — the world’s largest independent high-voltage battery testing center. The system complies with several global standards, including IEC, ISO, UL, SAE, and AIS, with particular attention to AIS norms critical for the Indian market.

Dr. Thomas Hülshorst, Global Vice President of Electric Powertrain at FEV, emphasized that the joint development addressed India-specific needs while exceeding international benchmarks.

The battery system entered presale in mid-February and is now entering series production. R Velusamy, President of Automotive Technology and Product Development at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., expressed confidence in the continued collaboration between the companies, promising future products with similar levels of innovation, safety, and performance.

This partnership combines FEV’s global engineering excellence with Mahindra’s strong presence in the Indian automotive market. FEV operates in 40 locations with 7,000 employees worldwide, while Mahindra Group employs over 260,000 people across more than 100 countries.

The launch reflects the rapid advancements in EV technology and rising demand for safe, efficient, and fast-charging battery solutions in India and globally.
