Reliance Retail and Japan-based convenience-store chain 7-Eleven are set to end their five-year franchise partnership in India, with most of the nearly 60 outlets operated under the arrangement likely to shut, according to a report.
The partnership has struggled to achieve profitability amid intense competition from quick-commerce platforms and neighbourhood kirana stores, which have put pressure on the convenience-store model in India’s price-sensitive retail market. Some outlets are reportedly clearing existing inventory ahead of their closure.
7-Eleven may explore a partnership with another Indian company to maintain its presence in the country, although no decision has been finalised yet.
Reliance Retail entered into a franchise agreement with 7-Eleven in October 2021 to operate the global convenience-store chain in India. The partnership opened its first 7-Eleven outlet in Mumbai and subsequently expanded its presence across the country.
