Three decades of innovation, creativity and customer trust have transformed Geetanjali Salon into one of India's most admired premium salon brands. What began as a single salon in New Delhi's Green Park in 1989 has grown into a network of over 200 salons across 50 cities. Driven by global partnerships, continuous skill development and a robust franchise model, the brand continues to raise the bar for professional beauty and wellness services.
In this exclusive conversation, Sumit Israni, Managing Director and Creative Head, Geetanjali Salon Private Ltd, shares the brand's inspiring growth story, the milestones that shaped its success, the changing dynamics of the beauty industry and how franchising remains central to Geetanjali Salon's ambitious growth journey.
Geetanjali Salon has grown from a single outlet in Green Park in 1989 to over 200 salons across 50+ cities. What inspired the brand's journey, and what have been the defining milestones that shaped its evolution into one of India's leading premium salon chains?
Geetanjali Salon was founded in 1989 with a clear vision, to redefine India's salon industry by bringing international standards of hairdressing, beauty and customer experience to Indian consumers. What began as a single salon in Green Park, New Delhi, has today evolved into one of India's largest organised premium salon brands with over 200 salons across 50+ cities.
From the very beginning, our philosophy has been centred on education, creativity and personalised service. We recognised early that beauty is not simply about appearance, it is about confidence, self-expression and creating meaningful experiences for every client.
Several milestones have shaped our journey, including the establishment of the Geetanjali Academy to train the next generation of professionals, partnerships with globally renowned brands such as L'Oréal Professionnel, Kérastase, Redken and Guinot, and recognition through prestigious accolades including the Indian Hairdressing Awards' Best Colour Trophy and Viewer's Choice Award. While these achievements are significant, our greatest milestone continues to be the trust and loyalty of clients who have been part of our journey for over three decades.
Your latest expansion spans both metro cities and emerging markets such as Raipur, Guwahati, Patiala and Jammu. What factors drive your market selection strategy, and where do you see the biggest opportunities for premium salon brands in India over the next five years?
India's beauty landscape has evolved significantly over the last decade. Premium beauty is no longer limited to metropolitan cities; consumers across emerging markets are increasingly seeking high-quality services, international brands and elevated salon experiences.
Our market selection strategy is driven by a combination of consumer aspirations, economic growth, organised retail infrastructure and the strength of local entrepreneurial partners. We carefully evaluate long-term demand rather than short-term opportunities.
Looking ahead, we believe Tier II and Tier III cities present one of the biggest growth opportunities for organised premium salon brands. At the same time, metro markets will continue to evolve through larger flagship salons offering integrated hair, beauty, skincare and wellness experiences.
Franchising has played a key role in scaling organised retail businesses. How important is the franchise model to Geetanjali Salon's growth strategy, and what proportion of your current 200-plus salons operate under the franchise model?
Franchising has been one of the strongest pillars of Geetanjali Salon's expansion strategy. It has enabled us to scale efficiently while partnering with entrepreneurs who understand their local markets and share our commitment to quality and customer experience.
Today, the majority of our network operates under the franchise model. However, we see franchising as much more than expansion, it is about building long-term partnerships. Our role extends beyond licensing the brand; we work closely with every franchise partner to ensure operational excellence, business sustainability and consistent customer experiences across every location.
What does an ideal Geetanjali Salon franchise partner look like? Could you elaborate on the typical investment required, preferred store size, manpower requirements, expected ROI and the support the company provides to franchisees?
Our ideal franchise partner is someone who is passionate about building a premium consumer business and shares our commitment to service excellence. While experience in the beauty industry is an advantage, an entrepreneurial mindset, operational discipline and a long-term outlook are equally important.
A Geetanjali Salon typically requires an investment starting from approximately ₹1 crore, depending on the city and salon format. Our preferred store size ranges between 1,500 and 2,500 sq. ft., supported by a team of approximately 20 to 35 trained professionals.
What truly differentiates our franchise model is the comprehensive support we provide; from location selection and salon design to recruitment, technical education, operational systems, marketing support, inventory planning and continuous business mentoring. Our objective is to build profitable businesses while maintaining the premium standards associated with the Geetanjali brand.
Maintaining service consistency across a large network is often a challenge in the salon business. How do your training academy, standard operating procedures and quality audits ensure a uniform customer experience across company-owned and franchise-operated outlets?
Consistency is fundamental to the Geetanjali experience. Regardless of which salon a client visits, they should receive the same level of professionalism, expertise and personalised care.
The Geetanjali Academy plays a central role in achieving this by providing structured education, continuous technical training and regular skill enhancement programmes for our professionals. We also work closely with our international brand partners to ensure our teams remain updated with global techniques and product innovations.
Alongside training, detailed standard operating procedures govern every aspect of the customer journey—from consultation and service delivery to hygiene, retail recommendations and aftercare. Regular quality audits and performance reviews help us maintain consistency across both company-owned and franchise-operated salons.
With consumers becoming increasingly conscious about skincare, hair health and premium beauty solutions, how has customer behaviour evolved over the years, and how is Geetanjali Salon adapting its services and product portfolio to meet these changing expectations?
Today's consumers are more informed than ever before. They seek personalised solutions, long-term results and professional guidance rather than one-size-fits-all beauty services.
We have seen increasing demand for customised haircare, scalp health, advanced colour services and professional skincare treatments. Clients are investing more in preventive care and wellness than ever before.
To meet these evolving expectations, Geetanjali Salon has expanded its service portfolio to include advanced hair rituals, premium colour techniques, restorative treatments and professional skincare through Guinot. Our consultation-led approach ensures every recommendation is tailored to the client's individual concerns, lifestyle and beauty goals.
The exclusive partnership with French skincare brand Guinot marks a significant strategic move. Beyond enhancing customer experience, how do you see premium international brand partnerships contributing to your long-term growth and product distribution strategy across your salon network?
International partnerships have always been an important part of Geetanjali Salon's evolution. They enable us to bring globally recognised expertise, innovation and professional products to Indian consumers while maintaining the highest standards of service.
Our exclusive partnership with Guinot reflects our vision of becoming a holistic beauty destination that extends beyond hair into advanced skincare and wellness. It also creates opportunities to strengthen our premium positioning while expanding retail offerings across our salon network.
Going forward, strategic collaborations with leading international brands will continue to play a vital role in enhancing both customer experience and business growth.
The premium salon industry is becoming increasingly competitive with the expansion of organised chains, luxury salons and digital-first beauty brands. What differentiates Geetanjali Salon from its competitors, and what remains your strongest USP in this evolving landscape?
Our greatest differentiator is our legacy of expertise combined with a culture of continuous innovation.
For over three decades, we have consistently invested in education, creativity and world-class service standards while building lasting relationships with our clients. We believe luxury is defined not only by beautiful spaces and premium products, but by the expertise of our professionals and the personalised experiences they create.
This unwavering focus on craftsmanship, combined with trusted global partnerships and a strong education ecosystem, continues to distinguish Geetanjali Salon in an increasingly competitive market.
Technology, personalised consultations and digital experiences are increasingly influencing the salon industry. How is Geetanjali Salon leveraging digital tools while preserving the personalised touch that defines premium salon services?
Technology has become an important enabler in enhancing the overall client experience, but at Geetanjali Salon, it will always complement, not replace, the human connection that lies at the heart of our business.
We continue to invest in advanced consultation tools, digital customer engagement platforms and seamless appointment experiences that allow us to better understand our clients' needs and preferences. These innovations help our teams deliver more informed consultations, personalised recommendations and consistent service standards across our network.
However, what truly defines a premium salon experience is the expertise of our professionals and the relationships they build with every client. The trust, creativity and personalised attention our stylists provide remain our greatest differentiators, and every technological advancement is designed to support that experience rather than replace it.
What is your vision for Geetanjali Salon over the next five years? Are you targeting specific milestones in terms of salon count, franchise expansion, international collaborations or new service categories as you aim to redefine India's premium beauty ecosystem?
Our vision has always extended beyond building a salon chain; we are creating a comprehensive beauty ecosystem. Over the next five years, our focus is on expanding Geetanjali into one of India's most influential premium beauty brands, with a network of 500 Geetanjali Salons and Studios across the country.
Growth, however, will never be measured by numbers alone. Every new location must reflect the same standards of technical excellence, personalised service and elevated client experience that have defined Geetanjali Salon for over three decades. Strategic franchise partnerships will continue to drive this expansion, supported by the Geetanjali Academy, robust operational systems and a strong culture of continuous learning.
We also see significant opportunities in premium skincare, wellness and holistic beauty experiences. By strengthening our partnerships with globally respected brands such as Guinot, Kérastase, L'Oréal Professionnel and Redken, we aim to bring international innovations and expertise to clients across India while continually expanding our portfolio of premium services.
Our ambition is not simply to increase our footprint, but to redefine organised beauty retail in India, creating destinations where innovation, artistry, luxury and personalised care come together. As consumer expectations continue to evolve, we remain committed to setting new benchmarks for excellence while building enduring value for our clients, franchise partners and the industry as a whole.
