How Swiss Military Is Redefining Affordable Luxury for the New India
Anuj Sawhney, MD, Swiss Military, shares insights on the brand’s growth journey, India strategy, evolving consumer trends, and how innovation and accessibility are shaping the future of premium lifestyle products.

  • Tell us a bit about your professional journey. When did you come onboard with Swiss Military? How has the experience been so far?

I joined Swiss Military in 1997, soon after completing my MBA in International Marketing from the United States. My initial role as a Sourcing Manager gave me early exposure to the Swiss ethos of clarity, precision, and uncompromising standards.  The disciplined Swiss way of business was a defining experience that shaped my professional outlook and I was soon elevated to the position of Global Sourcing Head.

In 2006, I was entrusted with the responsibility of leading the company globally as Managing Director, marking a significant milestone in my career. The journey since then has been immensely rewarding. It has involved steering the brand from being primarily Europe-focused to establishing a strong presence across 26 countries worldwide. A critical part of this expansion has been striking the right balance between the Swiss philosophy of delivering premium quality and adapting to market realities, driven by local insights.

My vision has consistently been to ensure that Swiss Military remains synonymous with superior quality while keeping the products accessible and aspirational. This philosophy continues to guide our efforts as we strengthen our global footprint and deepen our connect with consumers across diverse geographies.

  • How has the brand’s journey been in India?

Since its entry into India, the business has witnessed consistent growth, driven by a sharp focus on customer-centric innovation and value. Today, Swiss Military is synonymous with durability, precision, and accessible premium. The brand enjoys one of the highest ‘impulse buy’ rates across categories because we focus on addressing ‘demand vacuums’ that other brands overlook. Our robust performance in India is fueled by rapid product expansions and geographic growth into new markets.

  • What is your management mantra?

My leadership mantra is to lead by example while empowering my team, whom I see as my extended family. I am hands-on yet collaborative, always striving to be innovative, inspirational and deeply inclusive. Every decision is guided by the intent to spark growth and uplift our people, a philosophy that has enabled us to achieve one of the industry’s lowest attrition rates.

  • What are Swiss Military’s expansion plans for FY26?

For FY26, our focus is on deepening Swiss Military’s presence in India. Our strengthening omni-channel strategy will be a key enabler. We expect our expansive offline presence across 4000+ MBOs and expanding EBO footprint to lead the charge as it continues to drive over 75% of revenue, especially for large-ticket purchases in aspirational Tier II and Tier III markets.

Our digital channels, which currently contribute close to 25%, are primed for accelerated growth as more and more consumers shop online. Together, these levers place us in a strong position to serve our customers this festive season.

In line with ‘Make in India’, our facility in Faridabad will anchor faster go-to-market cycles and introduce more locally designed products. We have also launched aspirational collections this year like Black Gold Collection and sustainable lines like EKOSWISS, while continuing monthly innovations in travel gear and electronics.

  • Where do you see the brand 5 years from now, both globally and in India?

Five years from now, I see Swiss Military as a truly global lifestyle brand, with India at the heart of its growth story. Globally, we will continue to strengthen our presence across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East with a sharper focus on innovation-led categories.

In India, our vision is to be in every consumer’s consideration set for travel gear and lifestyle essentials, driven by an expansive retail footprint, a strong digital presence, and deeper local manufacturing. The idea is not just to scale numbers but to build Swiss Military into a household name that stands for affordable luxury, everyday precision, and trust.

  • In your view, how has the premium lifestyle products’ market evolved over the last 5 years?

Five years ago ‘premium’ was metro-centric and often indulgent. Today, consumers across India want premium experiences, not just labels. They’re looking for quality, durability, and design that elevate their everyday lives.

This shift is coming not just from the metros but increasingly from tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Young professionals and first-time buyers in these towns want products that reflect their aspirations, and they are unapologetic about investing in them. That’s a huge cultural change. For us at Swiss Military, this has validated our belief that premium doesn’t always have to mean prohibitively expensive, it can be accessible, functional, and still aspirational.

  • How will it evolve in the next 5 years?

The next five years will be about depth and daily integration. I see the premium lifestyle category becoming more integrated with people’s daily lives. It won’t be about buying a premium product once in a while. It will be about living a premium experience every day, whether that’s through sustainable choices, thoughtfully designed products, or seamless shopping journeys. The consumer is going to become far more demanding, and rightly so.

Consumers will want innovation, responsibility, and they’ll want brands to deliver value without compromise. Importantly, the growth story will play out across India, not just in Delhi or Mumbai. Cities like Surat, Pune, Lucknow, and Hyderabad will shape the narrative as much as the metros. That’s the future I’m excited about, premiumisation that is broad-based, inclusive, and deeply Indian in character.

  • How have you integrated technology and AI for the brand’s growth and expansion?

At Swiss Military, we’ve built a model that thrives on innovation and technology. In our travel gear category, we've been introducing 3-4 new products monthly across luggage, backpacks, and travel accessories, with innovations focused on enhanced durability and utility like super silent wheels, USB charging ports, anti-theft zippers and easy-access laptop compartments. Our electronics portfolio sees 1-2 new products monthly across speakers, earbuds, and power banks, keeping pace with the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

AI is helping us in subtle but powerful ways, whether it’s predicting demand, personalizing engagement, or simply ensuring the right product reaches the right customer at the right time. For me, that’s the real magic of technology, it allows us to stay close to the consumer, even as we scale.

  • Name 5 key markets in India for Swiss Military.

India as a whole is a key market for us, but there are cities and regions that stand out for different reasons. Surat, for example, has been phenomenal, that’s why we chose it for our very first Exclusive Brand Outlet.

The southern markets including Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad are equally important, and we’re deepening our presence there with leading retailers. Of course, metros like Delhi NCR and Mumbai remain vital, especially as we look at opening flagship stores that can showcase the full Swiss Military experience.

At the same time, tier-2 cities like Ahmedabad and Pune are becoming increasingly central to our plans because the appetite for premium lifestyle products there is unmistakable.

  • 3 key trends according to you in the premium lifestyle products’ industry right now?

The first big shift I see is that premium has become inclusive. It’s no longer something reserved for a select few. It’s something young consumers in every part of the country want to experience, and they are willing to pay for it if the value is clear.

The second is sustainability & conscious consumption. Brands that are transparent, responsible, and mindful are automatically seen as more premium.

And the third is omnichannel convergence. Consumers don’t think in silos anymore. They might discover a product on Instagram, buy it on Blinkit, and then walk into a flagship store to experience the brand. For companies like ours, the challenge and the opportunity are to make sure that journey feels seamless, consistent, and rewarding at every step.
