After childbirth, when the umbilical cord is cut away from the child and the mother (which is the standard practice of childbirth, whether stem cells are to be collected or otherwise), the blood from within it is drained and collected into a bag, and a specified length of the umbilical cord itself is cut and put into special transportation tubes. Both these units, i.e. the cord blood and cord tissue are then shipped through specialized air transport to the stem cell laboratory where they are tested, processed and preserved for the long term. “Long term” indicates an initial storage period of up to 21 years, however the specimen can remain well preserved in a viable state for many more years.
