Every idea starts with a problem. Ours was simple: Quality Chinese Food Being Inaccessible in Kolkata The history of Chinese cuisine in Kolkata dates back to the 18th century. A large number of Chinese locals settled in Kolkata in a location known as Chinatown (Tangra). Tangra became home to several Cantonese families and they started earning their livelihood through various means including serving their delicacies.
Chinese food soon became one of the favourite cuisines for the people of Kolkata in both authentic and modified variations. The Chinese restaurants remained primarily confined to Chinatown and people had to travel a lot to eat these delicacies.
Our founder Dipak De is also a Chinese Food enthusiast and often traveled across the city to enjoy Chinese delicacies served in Tangra restaurants. This sparked an idea that led to the foundation of Shanghai. The idea was simple - offer quality Chinese Food across Kolkata at affordable prices.
Shanghai is on a mission to offer quality Chinese food that is consistent across different locations in Kolkata. We had started our journey by launching our first restaurant in Nager Bazar, Dum Dum. We are launching 2 more locations this year - Salt Lake and Jadavpur. We plan to open 20 locations in 3 years to cater across Kolkata.
