A 30-year veteran of the food service industry, Tony Pavese, Chief Operating Officer, International, Dunkin' Donuts, has been instrumental in the iconic brand's global expansion. In an exclusive interview to Tushi Deb, Pavese shares his vision and strategies for the Indian market.
Which have been the fastest growing markets for Dunkin'? How important is the Indian market for you?
As an American brand, our fastest growing market remains the United States. The Indian market is very important to us, as there is a strong demand for what Dunkin' Donuts has to offer in India and beyond. The Dunkin' Donuts value proposition, high quality food and beverages served in a friendly, fast environment at a good value is important to our guests in India and worldwide. We are confident our consumers in India will embrace Dunkin' Donuts' traditional core menu featuring coffee, espresso-based drinks and donuts, along with locally influenced menu items.
What made you opt for franchising to expand?
The secret to Dunkin' Donuts' success is our incredible franchise community. We have nearly 1,200 franchise owners and operators in the US and more than 50 international partners, who provide their guests with a great experience each and every day and who are important contributors to their community and to our brand's growth.
Dunkin' has been across South East Asia but was absent from India. What were the reasons for this delayed entry?
Dunkin' Donuts' entry into India was long anticipated. We took time to understand the market and find the right partner, Jubilant FoodWorks. We have been in conversation with Jubilant FoodWorks for about three years and are now ready to enter India. Dunkin' Donuts is committed to India for the long term. We will invest significant time and resources in expanding the brand's presence throughout the country.
What was the reason behind opting for the franchise route?
We are delighted that we are undertaking this opportunity here with Jubilant FoodWorks, a world-class food service company. With their deep understanding of the Indian consumer, their solid operational expertise and their best-in-class marketing, I have no doubt that Dunkin' Donuts will soon become a preferred destination for the people of India.
Please share your expansion plans for India.
We expect Dunkin' Donuts growth in India to have great momentum. The master franchise agreement to open more than 500 Dunkin' Donuts restaurants throughout India over the next 15 years marks the largest international store development commitment in Dunkin' Donuts' history.
