AFTER the grand success of 29th FRO Expo in Chandigarh, a two-day FRO Expo was held at Hotel Pride, Ahmedabad, from July 24 to July 25. It was organised in cooperation with RE/MAX India and Franchise India. The expo showcased over 150 franchise concepts from over 25 business sectors with different investment levels. It attracted investors from all over the country, though mostly from western regions. Patronised by over 2,500 business visitors from in and around Gujarat, the footfall was commendable despite the heavy rainfall in Ahmedabad, which speaks highly of the eternal business spirit of the Gujarati entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurship Conference 2.0

The Entrepreneurship Conference 2.0 was held in association with REMAX/India, Centre for Entrepreneurship Development, Ahmedabad and Franchise India. The conference focused on the theme of ‘Basics of Becoming an Entrepreneur and Growing Your Business to the Next Level.’ The forum, once again, set a veritable example of being India's only platform to gather practice-oriented and well-grounded business ideas.

Day 1

The first day of the conference was shared by more than 60 delegates and 11 speakers. Dr Chandan Chatterjee, Director of CED, Ahmedabad, and Pranay Gupta, Joint CEO, Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship, Ahmedabad, opened the conference. Dr Chatterjee spoke on various driving forces for franchising and retail. Pranay Gupta addressed people on the challenges and skills required for becoming an entrepreneur.  The session continued with the expert views of N.P. Singh, Director, Retail, Samsonite Sales Pvt. Ltd, who spoke on business opportunities in specialty retail and K. Makarand of AOE Education Group, who shared his views on selecting the right location for a business. Anshul Arora, Group CEO of Edvance Group, Nanette D'Sa,  CEO, Brainworks Learning Systems Pvt Ltd, and Rohit Swarup, Director, Xplora Design School, collectively shared their insights on business opportunities in the education sector. Debashis Chattopadhyay, National Head Retail, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation,  Amul India, Jay Datta, General Manager, Havmor (Restaurants) and Daljit Singh Walia, Franchise Head, Rasna Private Limited, talked about opportunities in food retailing.  The first day concluded with the address of Utkarsh Jani of Jani and Jani Advocates, who told delegates about the legal know-how for franchisors and small business owners.

Day 2

The second day started with brainstorming on the emerging concept in the franchising world, i.e. speciality service business. The keynote speaker was Anckur Sama, Managing Director of Carz Spa, who shared his experience of the exclusive service retail business. It was followed by the session on grooming industry in India by Badal Chaudhary, CEO, Numero UNO and Jagdish  Purohit of JADE BLUE SUPREEMO Fashion World Pvt. Ltd. The third session was taken over by Anant Maloo, Managing Director of Timbor Homes Pvt Ltd. The fourth and fifth session was on ‘Tax Formalities and Financial Options for SMEs.’ Venus Barrack of Francorp concluded the session by sharing her views on different aspects of being an entrepreneur before franchising the business.

Enthusiastic investors

The Entrepreneurship Conference proved to be extremely useful for all those who attended. A statistic that perhaps represents a new record in this area is that out of the 18 scheduled speakers, all were in attendance and only one had to be replaced because of flight delay due to bad climate. From our experience, we can safely say that open attendance but limited subject concept is quite a desirable meeting format and should be used for most of the scientific meetings.
