Additions to McDonald's menu and units

McDonald's US restaurants are expected to launch a line of premium chicken sandwiches which it is testing in markets with four varieties offered at prices ranging from $2.99 to $4.30. The sandwiches come on toasted wheat buns with the chicken fried or grilled.

McDonald's opened a high-profile restaurant featuring high-tech accouterments, a modern décour and the US's fifth McCafe unit, recently. The restaurant, more than twice the size of a traditional McDonald's, at 10,500 sq.ft, has a two-lane drive-thru and is located next to the company's domestic headquarters in Oak Brook, Ill., near a major shopping complex.

In an attempt to revitalise its struggling European division, McDonald's Corp named Denis Hennequin, executive vice-president of McDonald's Europe, as the new president for the 6,200 restaurant region after veteran Russ Smyth resigned, effective July 1.

KFC's expansion plans for Asia, EU

Yum! Brands, operator of the KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, are set to further open 100 outlets in Britain and 200 more franchise restaurants in Asia by the year end. In China the company will reach its full year target to open 375 new restaurants, while internationally it is projected at 725 new restaurants. Yum! operates or owns wholly 34,000 restaurants worldwide.

Subway launches Gift Card programme

Subway is readying a fourth-quarter rollout of dual-use electronic gift and cash cards to all of its US and Canadian locations which is likely to make it the leading electronic gift and cash card programme among US-based food service operators. The current standard bearer is the Starbucks Card from Seattle-based Starbucks Coffee. The SubwayCard can be loaded with a dollar value of up to $100 at a time and given as a gift. It also acts as a reloadable, cash-replacement card that consumers can use like a credit card when they make purchases in branches of the chain. Subway will offer the card in outlets and online besides selling the cards through third-party grocery stores and other major retailers.

Church's spices up menu

After launching a US-wide test of spicy chicken at 100 company and franchised restaurants, Atlanta-based Church's Chicken is rolling out spicy bone-in chicken and chicken tenders to its entire 1,234 unit domestic system as well as its nearly 100 stores in Mexico. The brand is seeing its strongest reception to the spicy chicken products in urban markets where it reaches a large clientele. Currently, Church's has a total of 1,567 international and domestic units.

Regional chain on expansion drive

Growing from a single unit until 1997 to 14 units today Quaker Steak & Lube has aggressive expansion plans for 50 to 60 franchised restaurants by 2008. Five units are scheduled to debut by the year end with up to 12 restaurants slated for 2006 and 15 more to follow in 2007. Quaker Steak & Lube, which is known for its award-winning chicken wings, is filled with an array of automotive memorabilia hung from the ceilings. In addition, the floors and walls are adorned with old gas pumps and racing equipment.
