In a significant boost to India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem, South Korean tech giant Samsung has commenced production of laptops at its Greater Noida facility, marking a strategic expansion of its local manufacturing portfolio.
According to sources familiar with the development, Samsung has started rolling out laptops from its long-established factory in Greater Noida, where it already produces smartphones, feature phones, tablets, and wearable devices.
“Samsung has expanded its manufacturing portfolio. It has started manufacturing laptops in India at its Greater Noida factory. It has plans to start manufacturing more devices in the country,” a source told PTI.
An official statement from the company is awaited, as queries sent to Samsung did not receive a response.
The move aligns with Samsung’s broader strategy to deepen its manufacturing footprint in India—home to its second-largest mobile phone production unit globally. The company is currently the second-largest exporter of smartphones from India, following Apple.
Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, acknowledged the development following a recent meeting with Samsung Southwest Asia President & CEO JB Park and Corporate VP SP Chun. “Samsung continues to expand manufacturing of its advanced technology devices in Bharat, driven by talent and innovation,” the minister posted on social media.
Samsung’s Greater Noida facility, established in 1996, was among the earliest major global electronics manufacturing investments in India. The company had previously indicated its intentions to begin laptop manufacturing, with Samsung Electronics’ President and Head of Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, TM Roh, revealing plans earlier this year.
While Samsung ranks as India’s second-largest smartphone brand in terms of both volume and value, it is still working to establish a strong presence in the competitive laptop segment. However, the company holds a solid position in the tablet market, securing a 15% share according to CyberMedia Research.
Samsung’s move into domestic laptop production is expected to not only reduce its reliance on imports but also enhance its competitiveness in India’s growing PC market.
