The Delhi government has extended its Electric Vehicle (EV) policy until March 2026 or until a revised version is officially notified. The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at the Delhi Secretariat on Tuesday.
Officials stated that the extension provides the Transport Department with additional time to conduct stakeholder consultations and draft a comprehensive policy that addresses current gaps and future needs in the EV ecosystem.
Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh emphasized the importance of public participation in shaping the new policy. “We want to ensure that the next phase of EV adoption in Delhi is guided by inputs from citizens, industry, experts, and environmental stakeholders,” he said.
First introduced in 2020, Delhi’s EV policy significantly boosted the adoption of electric vehicles, particularly two-wheelers and e-rickshaws. However, challenges remain in areas such as charging infrastructure and end-of-life (EOL) battery management.
The policy has seen multiple extensions under both the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and the current Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led administration. The last three-month extension expired on July 15.
According to officials, the revised policy will likely focus on expanding the EV charging network, reviewing subsidies, and establishing clear guidelines for battery and e-waste disposal. It also aims to clearly define roles for public and private sector stakeholders as the EV landscape evolves.
The Transport Department noted that the policy extension prevents a regulatory vacuum and allows for necessary course correction. However, there is currently no set timeline for the release of the draft policy for public feedback. The updated version is expected to align with the government’s broader environmental and sustainability goals.
