In a major push to modernize its operations and expand its reach, Bata India has announced a ₹300 million investment in upgrading its Batanagar manufacturing facility. The company is installing cutting-edge machinery, including Polyurethane Direct Injection Process (PUDIP) and IM EVA systems, aimed at boosting the production of its Floatz and Bata Industrial footwear lines.
The advanced equipment includes robotic spraying units, automated roughening arms, and automated mould handling systems, designed to improve manufacturing precision, consistency, and output.
“This investment reflects our deep commitment to modernizing our manufacturing and leading with quality,” said Anjan Kundu, Head of Supply Chain Management at Bata India. “By revitalizing the legacy of Batanagar, we aim to reaffirm our leadership in quality, innovation, and customer experience.”
Established in the 1930s, the Batanagar facility has long been a cornerstone of India’s footwear industry, particularly in West Bengal, helping to establish the region as a hub for exports and shoemaking excellence. Bata says the upgraded plant will adhere to stringent safety protocols, ensuring the health and well-being of its workforce while embracing automation and innovation.
The modernization effort comes amid a broader strategy to grow Bata’s presence in tier-II and tier-III markets. Over the past year, the company has opened around 130 new retail outlets, with more than half located in smaller towns. This expansion brings Bata’s total retail network to over 500 stores, significantly increasing access to global footwear styles and technology in non-metro regions.
The move also supports local entrepreneurship, as the growing franchise network creates new business opportunities in underserved markets.
In addition to business growth, Bata continues to invest in social impact through its Bata Children’s Program, which provides education, mentorship, and footwear to underprivileged children across India.
With its dual focus on manufacturing innovation and inclusive retail expansion, Bata India is positioning itself for sustained leadership in the country’s rapidly evolving footwear industry.
