Papa John’s Re-Enters India with Bengaluru Launch, Plans 650 Stores in Decade-Long Expansion

American pizza giant Papa John’s has re-entered the Indian market with the launch of four flagship dine-in outlets in Bengaluru, marking its comeback eight years after exiting the country. The company has ambitious plans to scale up to 650 company-owned stores over the next ten years, betting big on India's fast-growing food services sector.

The brand’s return is spearheaded by UAE-based PJP Investments Group and investment firm Pulsar Capital, who are joint master franchisees for India. The new launch follows nearly two years of strategic planning, focusing on a city-by-city rollout, high-quality ingredients, and an upgraded customer experience, according to Tapan Vaidya, Group CEO of PJP Investments.

The first four restaurants—located in Indiranagar, Sarjapur Road, Electronic City, and Hennur—span 1,600 to 2,000 sq ft and are positioned as flagship dine-in outlets. These will be followed by smaller 1,200 sq ft stores focused on delivery and takeaway, aiming for 30 outlets in Bengaluru within two years before expanding to Chennai, Hyderabad, and eventually northern India.

“We're not just entering markets—we're building infrastructure and ensuring consistency. For example, we've set up a quality control centre in Hennur to provide freshly-prepared dough daily to our Bengaluru stores,” said Vaidya. This hub-and-spoke model will be replicated in other cities during the national rollout.

Papa John’s, America’s third-largest pizza chain, is entering a highly competitive market, dominated by players like Domino’s and Pizza Hut. To differentiate, the brand is offering a diverse pricing range—from Rs 149 to Rs 799—and is banking on its premium quality ingredients and a curated menu tailored for Indian tastes.

About two-thirds of the menu will cater specifically to Indian preferences, with offerings like vegetarian pizzas, ghee roast pizza, and tandoori sauce-based varieties, alongside global bestsellers. The chain has also partnered with Coca-Cola as its official beverage provider and will offer a range of starters and desserts.

The domestic pizza market, estimated at ₹15,000 crore and growing at 9.3% annually, has become a hotbed of activity. Papa John’s re-entry comes on the heels of Little Caesars—another American pizza chain—launching its first Indian outlet in Delhi earlier this year, with plans for 100 stores.

With a strategic, phased approach and an emphasis on quality and localization, Papa John’s is making a bold attempt to claim a larger slice of India’s rapidly expanding foodservice pie.
