BIBA Broadens Its Consumer Base in Malaysia with Cross-Cultural Fashion Appeal
Long recognised in India for its premium ethnic wear, kurtas and contemporary Indian silhouettes, BIBA has spent nearly four decades catering to women seeking elegant ensembles for weddings, festivals and celebrations.

Less than a year after entering the Malaysian market, Indian fashion brand BIBA is witnessing a shift in consumer preferences, with a growing number of Malay and Chinese women incorporating its contemporary ethnic wear into their everyday wardrobes. The trend reflects an increasing acceptance of Indian-inspired fashion beyond traditional festive and ceremonial occasions.

Long recognised in India for its premium ethnic wear, kurtas and contemporary Indian silhouettes, BIBA has spent nearly four decades catering to women seeking elegant ensembles for weddings, festivals and celebrations. In Malaysia, however, the brand is finding resonance with a far more diverse audience, as shoppers embrace its designs for work, casual outings and everyday wear.

According to BIBA Malaysia franchise owners Buelah Subramaniam and Krishsubashini Govindasamy, local consumer behaviour indicates that contemporary Indian fashion is steadily gaining traction across the country's multicultural communities. Encouraged by this response, the duo aims to further expand the brand's appeal among Malaysia's Malay, Chinese and Indian consumers.

“Many people still think Indian fashion is only for weddings or festivals, and this is a perception we want to change,” Buelah and Krishsubashini said.

“It is not just our Indian customers. We’re seeing Malay and Chinese customers coming in specifically looking for pieces they can wear to work.”

Having shopped at BIBA's stores in India for several years, Krishsubashini said she saw an opportunity to introduce the brand to Malaysia, believing its contemporary ethnic wear would appeal to a much wider and more diverse customer base.

“Malaysia has a vibrant multicultural community with a growing appreciation for Indian fashion, not only among the Indian community but also among women who simply love colourful, contemporary clothing,” she said.

The entrepreneurs said their partnership combines complementary strengths in business management, operations, fashion and customer engagement.

“Our partnership began through a shared passion for entrepreneurship and a common belief that fashion has the power to inspire confidence,” Buelah said.

Looking ahead, the pair said their priority is to strengthen BIBA’s brand presence in Malaysia before expanding into more strategic locations nationwide.

“We are proud to have reached three stores within our first year, but we see this as just the beginning,” they both echoed.

“Our aspiration is to establish BIBA as one of Malaysia’s most sought-after Indian fashion brands while making contemporary Indian wear more accessible to women across the country.

“Our long-term hope is simply for more Malaysian women to discover how versatile Indian fashion can be, whatever their background.”

Within its first year of operations in Malaysia, BIBA has expanded its footprint to three outlets located in Brickfields, 1 Utama Shopping Centre and Klang, reflecting the brand's growing acceptance among the country's multicultural consumer base.

To celebrate its first anniversary in the market, BIBA will offer discounts of up to 50 per cent across all three stores from July 10 to 12. The anniversary celebrations will also include a dedicated Thank You Day and a range of in-store activities for customers.
