Bata India Eyes Aggressive Expansion, Aims to Double Revenue in 5 Years
The company plans to scale up its retail footprint through a mix of company-owned stores and franchise outlets, while also accelerating its e-commerce strategy to capture a larger share of digitally savvy consumers.

Bata India is gearing up for a strong growth phase, with the company targeting a doubling of its turnover over the next five years, as part of a renewed focus on the Indian market. The strategy comes under the leadership of Panos Mytaros, who has already made multiple visits to India within months of taking charge, underlining the country’s importance as Bata Group’s largest global market.

Describing India as a “sleeping giant” that is now beginning to awaken, Mytaros acknowledged that growth in the market has remained relatively stagnant in recent years. However, he emphasized that the company is now taking decisive steps to reinvigorate its presence by strengthening brand relevance and product appeal for modern consumers.

India currently contributes nearly one-fourth of Bata Group’s global revenues, making it a critical market for future expansion. The company plans to scale up its retail footprint through a mix of company-owned stores and franchise outlets, while also accelerating its e-commerce strategy to capture a larger share of digitally savvy consumers.

A key pillar of Bata’s growth roadmap will be targeting younger audiences, particularly through an expanded focus on sneakers. Mytaros highlighted that the brand will sharpen its product positioning, clearly differentiating between formal footwear and sneakers, with a more defined and contemporary offering expected from 2027 onwards. Sneakers, he noted, will serve as a crucial entry point to engage Gen Z and millennial consumers.

While premiumisation will play a role in the strategy, Bata will continue to cater to the mass market segment, which remains central to its identity. The company also benefits from local manufacturing in India, allowing it to maintain price stability despite global uncertainties.

Operating in an increasingly competitive scene, with global brands like Nike and Adidas, alongside domestic players such as Metro Brands, Campus Activewear, and Relaxo Footwears, Bata is also facing pressure from emerging D2C brands catering to younger consumers.
