It has been a long standing need of our education to give due recognition to the importance of competitive exams. Finally we all have to accept the fact that there is a race amongst us for resources which are very scarce, be it an admission in a good college, school, playschool, job or any other walk of life. Agreed that our society needs to take pressure off youngsters, but at the same time isn't it also important for us to harden our youngsters to face the competition of life effectively ? To enable them to choose what is best for them and then succeeding in that choice, without putting professions into hierachial slots ?
This need, is more pronounced in Maharashtra , as it is one of the most progressive states in the country. It has a high literacy rate and high premium is placed by families on Education, Professional training and Government jobs. This has resulted in a huge surge in the number of students who are pursuing aspirations of civil services, MBA and other such careers which are related to competitive exams.
To enter any professional training program or the civil services, students have to appear for competitive exams. The material and training required for success in these exams is different in content and approach from academic exams. As a result, today we have a plethora of training institutes and publishing houses catering to this very exclusive and essential need of students. This niche is at par in terms of student turnover with many universities in the state. Even educationists and policy makers have recognised this special need of students and have encouraged setting up of independent competitive exam training centres in colleges
