India’s digital payments ecosystem continues to surge, with Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions hitting a new record of ₹25.14 lakh crore in May 2025, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
The transaction value rose by 5% compared to April’s ₹23.94 lakh crore, while the volume of transactions climbed to 1,867.7 crore from 1,789.3 crore the previous month. This marks the highest-ever value recorded in a single month, surpassing the previous peak of ₹24.77 lakh crore seen in March.
Year-on-year, UPI transaction value witnessed a robust 23% growth, up from ₹20.44 lakh crore in May 2024.
Daily transactions averaged ₹81,106 crore in May, reflecting a 1.5% increase from April’s daily average of ₹79,831 crore.
Industry experts attribute the surge to increasing adoption of digital payments across both urban and rural India. "This milestone is a resounding testament to the growing trust in UPI as the go-to platform for digital transactions," said Dilip Modi, founder and CEO of Spice Money. "Digital finance in India is no longer just an aspiration—it has become foundational."
Operated by the NPCI—an initiative backed by the Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Banks' Association—UPI enables real-time peer-to-peer and merchant transactions and has emerged as the backbone of India’s digital payment infrastructure.
With consistent growth and expanding reach, UPI continues to redefine the way India transacts, signaling a maturing digital economy powered by accessibility, simplicity, and user trust.
