The government is expected to issue demand incentive guidelines for electric ambulances under the ₹10,900 crore PM E-Drive scheme by the end of this year. According to senior officials, subsidies for electric ambulances could become applicable from early 2026.
Electric ambulances have been officially included under the PM E-Drive scheme, with ₹500 crore allocated to support their adoption. However, the exact amount of subsidy and detailed guidelines are still under formulation.
“One electric ambulance has been homologated last month, and other OEMs are working on their models. We expect electric ambulances to hit the market by December or January,” said Hanif Qureshi, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Heavy Industries.
He further stated that the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Road Transport have been consulted to ensure safety and patient care standards. The guidelines will be issued in time for the commercial rollout.
The PM E-Drive scheme, which replaced the FAME and temporary EMPS initiatives, came into effect on October 1, 2024, and will continue till March 31, 2026.
Out of the total ₹10,900 crore, ₹3,679 crore has been allocated for demand incentives for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, trucks, and ambulances, while ₹7,171 crore is dedicated to boosting electric bus adoption, public charging infrastructure, and testing upgrades.
Force Motors, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra are the leading OEMs in ambulance manufacturing. The only electric ambulance to receive homologation so far is from Force Motors, although commercial production is yet to begin.
