Carlsberg India’s Alwar brewery in Rajasthan has been ordered to shut down after the state pollution control board revoked its consent to operate over alleged pollution violations, according to a regulatory order. The development comes as the Danish brewer prepares for a proposed $700 million initial public offering (IPO) of its Indian business.

The Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board cited particulate emissions nearly eight times above the prescribed limit and inadequate pollution-monitoring data in its order. The brewery had submitted only 35.12% of the required data to the central regulator, against the mandatory threshold of 85%.

The board had granted the facility consent to operate on 24 April 2024, valid until 31 October 2028, subject to specified conditions. Following the withdrawal of the approval, the company has been directed to close the plant. The board has also instructed the local electricity distribution company to disconnect its power supply and warned of further action under air and water pollution laws in case of non-compliance.

The action follows an inspection by the Central Pollution Control Board in July and its recommendation for closure in August.

According to media reports, the shutdown could affect beer supplies in Rajasthan, although the impact may be limited as the peak summer season has ended. Carlsberg India, which sells brands including Carlsberg and Tuborg, did not respond to a request for comment.

The regulatory action comes at a crucial time for the company’s proposed listing. Earlier this month, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) issued its observations on the IPO, marking a key step in the listing process.

Media reports have indicated that Carlsberg India could seek a valuation of around ₹30,000 crore through the proposed offering. However, the company has not publicly confirmed the valuation or listing timeline. In February, Carlsberg Group CEO Jacob Aarup-Andersen confirmed that the group was considering an IPO of its Indian business.

For the financial year ended March 2025, Carlsberg India reported net sales of ₹8,939 crore and a net profit of ₹443 crore.
