Amazon Now, launched in January, 2025, is currently operates in about 30 cities. "We are expanding very rapidly. We have a path to expand to about 300 cities very, very soon," Nishant Sardana, Director - Amazon Now, told PTI.
Without specifying a timeframe for realising the plan to enter 300 cities, Sardana said the company is "quadrupling" its efforts to make it happen as fast as it can.
Since its launch, Amazon Now has been doing very well, growing about 20-25 per cent month-on-month, he said.
The quick commerce industry in the country is estimated to be about USD 20 billion a year, he said, without commenting on Amazon Now's share in it.
Amazon Now has invested Rs 2,800 crores, largely on setting up infrastructure and "partner safety and well-being," he said.
Sardana noted that Amazon Now currently has 650 Micro-Fulfillment Centres (MFCs) and would expand them to more than 1,000 shortly. The MFCs are spread across 30 cities.
As part of its omnichannel strategy, the company would set up some on its own, while banking on the omnichannel partner's stores, alongside the MFCs, to make faster deliveries for customers, he said.
In Hyderabad, Amazon Now has more than 50 MFCs and the company is witnessing almost 35 per cent month on month growth in the city following the launch of its services six months ago.
Asked when Amazon Now expects to reach breakeven as several quick commerce companies are not making profits, Sardana said: "I think it is very much the starting point of this business. As of now, our focus is on ensuring that we have the best selection to offer, at the best value and we are able to deliver the packages at the fastest possible rate. Profitability will happen over time."
Recalling that Amazon's overall business recently announced breakeven in the country, he expressed confidence that Amazon Now would also break even in due course.
Apart from grocery items, toys, puja items and products related to fitness and exercise seem to be "over-indexed" in the Hyderabad market, he said.
Sardana said Amazon Now is able to make fast deliveries to customers by setting up fulfilment centres closer to them, and there is no pressure on the delivery personnel to deliver within a certain timeframe.
