Where are all retailers heading in The Gen Z Era of Indian Fashion
India’s biggest retail giants are locked in a battle for the mass fashion crown. As Gen Z demands trendier, cheaper, and faster fashion, new age brands are springing up across the country, with a clear aim of owning the everyday wardrobe of young India.

Why Every Retail Giant Is Chasing Gen Z?

Walk into any Indian mall, and you're likely to find the same scene playing out across cities: racks full of Y2K jeans and pastel sweatshirts, and a dozen Gen Z shoppers lining up at trial rooms with shopping bags full of “just-dropped” looks they saw on Instagram yesterday.

These aren’t global fast fashion powerhouses like H&M or Zara dominating the scene — instead, it’s India’s own fashion retail heavyweights—Reliance, Trent, ABFRL, and even a Biyani comeback—launching their own trend-driven, mass fashion brands, all with one goal: own the Gen Z wardrobe.

The Major Players

In the recent years, a flurry of bold, youth-focused fashion labels has emerged — many launched by industry stalwarts, all laser-focused on trend-hungry young Indians:

Zudio (Trent / Tata Group)

Before Burnt Toast turned heads, Zudio had already laid the foundation for Tata’s mass fashion domination. With over 500+ stores and counting, Zudio cracked the code on offering fashion-forward basics at unbeatable prices — often under ₹999. Known for its lightning-fast turnaround on trends, wide product range, and rapid expansion into Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, Zudio is no longer just a brand — it's a budget fashion destination for young India. While Burnt Toast aims for niche edge, Zudio owns the mainstream lane.

Burnt Toast (Trent / Tata)

Leave it to the Tatas to launch a brand that’s as quirky as its name. Burnt Toast, launched in August 2025 in Bengaluru, is the cool cousin of Zudio. With graffiti-inspired tees, gender-fluid styles, and an intentionally edgy vibe, this label is tailor-made for college kids who want to stand out — without burning a hole in their wallets.

OWND! (ABFRL)

Forget Aditya Birla’s prim, polished fashion legacy — the company is now going streetwear. In September 2025, ABFRL announced it would rebrand its Style Up stores to OWND!, a new-age, Gen Z-first label. With plans for 100 stores this fiscal and a roadmap for 400+ stores, OWND! is here to become the everyday trend machine for young Indians. Prices? Friendly. Aesthetic? Insta-ready.

Yousta (Reliance Retail)

Reliance entered the Gen Z chat last year with Yousta, a sub-₹999 label that exploded across Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. Over the last six months, Yousta’s expansion has gone into overdrive, with stores popping up in high streets, malls, and everything in between. Weekly fashion drops, tech-enabled stores, and “Starring Now” collections based on viral trends have made Yousta one of the fastest-moving names in youth fashion.

Style Union (Nexon Omniverse)

Kishore Biyani’s (of Future Group) son’s Rakesh Biyani’s next-gen retail push is now live with new-age concept Style Union, that targets the value fashion space. Think affordable wear and a direct line to what’s hot on TikTok and Reels.

Numbers Don’t Lie

  • India’s fashion industry is having a moment — and it’s bigger, faster, and younger than ever before. The fast fashion market is estimated to hit $50 billion by 2031, with Gen Z and young millennials driving the demand, a report by Redseer Strategy Consultants showed.
  • The global market is projected to grow from USD 162.76 billion in 2025 to USD 317.98 billion by 2032, exhibiting a CAGR of 10.04% over the forecast period. Asia Pacific dominated the fast fashion market with a market share of 34.67% in 2024, as per Fortune Business Insights report.
  • Nearly 8.1 million sq. ft. of retail space was leased in top Indian cities in 2024, much of it by fashion and lifestyle brands, said a JLL report.
  • And the most telling stat? Myntra’s Gen Z customer base doubled to 16 million in just one year. That’s the kind of gold rush retailers can’t afford to ignore. What’s more, Bershka, Inditex’s youth-focused fast fashion label, has entered the Indian market via Myntra. Known globally for its street-style-meets-partywear aesthetic, Bershka brings bold silhouettes, influencer-approved fits, and European trends directly to Indian phones. Arriving just ahead of the festive season, this association brings BERSHKA’s bold and trend-first assortment to Myntra’s 70 million+ monthly active user base, allowing it to scale fast while tapping into India’s digital-first Gen Z audience.

Why Now? And Why Gen Z?

Gen Z isn’t just a demographic — they’re a cultural force. Born online, influenced by creators, and hyper-aware of aesthetic trends, this cohort shops with its eyes, its FYP, and its social feed. They don't care for legacy labels. They want to wear what their favorite micro-influencer posted last night. And the big players are finally listening.

As many retail experts opine, “Gen Z doesn’t wait. They’re not shopping for next season — they’re shopping for next weekend. And if you’re not dropping weekly collections, you’re just not on their radar.”

From Mall Anchors to Style Influencers: How These Stores Stand Out

These new mass-fashion brands are not subtle. They don’t sit quietly in the corner of malls — they dominate.

  • Anchor Store Status

OWND!, Burnt Toast, Yousta — each has become a retail anchor. With large-format stores, bold branding, and prime mall real estate, they’re being positioned front and center — the first thing you see as you walk in.

  • Fast Drops & Faster Trends

Forget seasons. These brands run on social media calendars. Whatever trend’s blowing up online — jelly sandals, oversized cargo pants, hot pink anything — shows up on racks in days. Yousta’s “Starring Now” drops are released weekly.

  • Influencer-First Design

Burnt Toast’s collections could be mistaken for your favorite creator’s closet. OWND!’s racks scream TikTok-core. These brands borrow heavily from influencer culture, with curated collections, co-branded drops, and clothing meant to go viral.

  • Tier 2 Is the New Metro

While the metros still matter, the real battleground is Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. Reliance’s Yousta is leading the charge, opening stores in Surat, Lucknow, Bhubaneswar and beyond. The strategy: deliver big-city fashion at small-town prices.

The Downside to the Upswing in Mass Fashion story:

  • Trend Fatigue
Fast fashion moves, well, fast. But miss a trend and you’re left with racks of unsold merchandise.
  • Brand Confusion
With so many labels in-house, retailers risk cannibalizing their own brands. Will Burnt Toast undercut Zudio? Can OWND! coexist with Pantaloons?
  • Sustainability Questions
Gen Z says they care about the planet — and they do. Brands pushing fast fashion without a sustainability story may find themselves unfollowed fast.
  • Over-Expansion
In a bid to scale quickly, these brands may stretch too thin. Real estate costs, staffing, inventory risk — it’s a dangerous cocktail if not managed well.

What Lies Ahead In The Gen Z Dominated Fashion Space

The writing’s on the wall- Gen Z wants style at the speed of swipe.

  • Mall developers now see these youth brands as top-performing anchor tenants.
  • Retailers are building supply chains designed to drop new styles weekly.
  • Consumers are more demanding, more stylish, and more trend-aware than ever before.

In five years, India’s fashion map will look very different. More experiential stores, more creator collaborations, more affordable cool. And the winners? Brands that can keep it fresh, authentic, and always just one step ahead of the algorithm. As in the end, it’s about Gen Z calling the shots, about malls turning into aesthetic battlegrounds, and about Indian retail giants moving at the speed of Reels.

This is a cultural shift — with a price tag Gen Z can afford and a style they can post.
