Branded Hospitality Finds Strong Growth in India’s Spiritual Tourism Boom
From Ayodhya and Varanasi to Haridwar, Amritsar, Vrindavan and Rameshwaram, hospitality companies are strategically positioning themselves in spiritual destinations to capitalize on rising travel demand and changing consumer expectations.

India’s spiritual tourism sector is undergoing a significant transformation as pilgrims increasingly seek branded, organized, and experience-driven hospitality options during religious travel. What was once dominated by traditional guesthouses and unorganized accommodations is now witnessing a growing influx of national and international hotel brands expanding aggressively across key pilgrimage destinations.

From Ayodhya and Varanasi to Haridwar, Amritsar, Vrindavan and Rameshwaram, hospitality companies are strategically positioning themselves in spiritual destinations to capitalize on rising travel demand and changing consumer expectations.

Industry experts believe the shift reflects a larger evolution in India’s travel economy where spiritual tourism is no longer viewed merely as a devotional journey, but as a year-round business opportunity supported by infrastructure development, growing domestic mobility, and increasing preference for quality accommodation.

Pilgrims Seek Comfort, Hygiene and Reliability

The profile of spiritual travellers in India has changed considerably over the last decade. Modern pilgrims today are not only travelling for religious purposes but are also combining spirituality with leisure, wellness, family vacations, and cultural exploration.

This shift has created demand for organized hospitality that offers hygiene, comfort, safety, digital booking convenience, and standardized services.

Unlike earlier years, when pilgrims were willing to compromise on accommodation standards, travellers now prefer professionally managed hotels that can provide reliable experiences close to temples and spiritual landmarks.

“Faith-based travel is becoming more aspirational and experience-oriented. Pilgrims today expect the same level of comfort and convenience that they would seek in mainstream leisure travel,” said a hospitality industry consultant tracking the sector.

The demand is especially strong among middle-income families, senior citizens, younger travellers, and NRIs visiting India’s religious destinations.

Spiritual Tourism Emerges as a High-Growth Hospitality Segment

Hospitality brands are increasingly recognizing spiritual destinations as commercially sustainable markets with strong occupancy potential and lower seasonality compared to traditional leisure destinations.

Pilgrimage centres attract millions of visitors throughout the year due to festivals, rituals, religious events, and family travel, ensuring relatively stable demand across seasons.

The government’s continued focus on religious tourism infrastructure has further accelerated growth. Large-scale investments under initiatives such as PRASHAD and Swadesh Darshan have improved roads, airports, railway stations, riverfronts, and tourism facilities in key spiritual cities.

Projects such as the Ram Mandir and the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor have significantly boosted tourism-driven economic activity, encouraging organized hotel operators to expand in these markets.

Improved connectivity has also made pilgrimage destinations more accessible to domestic and international travellers, opening new business opportunities for hotel chains.

Hotel Brands Expand Aggressively Across Spiritual Markets

Leading hospitality companies are now integrating pilgrimage destinations into their long-term expansion strategies through asset-light, franchise-led, and management contract models.

Eco Hotels & Resorts Limited recently partnered with Kesari Tours Pvt. Ltd. to strengthen its presence across spiritual destinations including Varanasi and Ayodhya.

Commenting on the collaboration, Vinod K. Tripathim Chairman, Eco Hotels & Resorts Limited said, “This collaboration aligns perfectly with our vision of expanding into high-growth spiritual destinations while offering environmentally responsible and comfortable hospitality solutions.”

Similarly, Lemon Tree Hotels strengthened its North India presence with the launch of Keys Select by Lemon Tree Hotels in Amritsar.

Vishvapreet Singh Cheema, President, Lemon Tree Hotels Ltd said, “The launch reflects our continued focus on bringing branded, reliable hospitality to India’s spiritual and leisure destinations.”

Global hospitality players are also entering this segment. IHG Hotels & Resorts recently introduced its voco brand in Amritsar with a property located near the Golden Temple.

Franchise Model Gains Momentum in Pilgrimage Destinations

Franchise-led growth is emerging as one of the most preferred expansion formats in spiritual markets.

Many regional developers and landowners in pilgrimage cities are partnering with established hotel brands to leverage operational expertise, centralized booking systems, loyalty programs, and stronger brand recognition.

For hotel companies, the franchise model allows faster penetration into tier-II and tier-III spiritual destinations without significant capital investment.

Industry analysts note that pilgrimage destinations are especially suitable for franchise growth because they offer predictable visitor demand and lower operational risks.

Budget and mid-scale hospitality formats continue to dominate these markets, as pilgrims generally prioritize cleanliness, affordability, location and convenience over ultra-luxury offerings.

At the same time, premium hospitality is gradually emerging in destinations witnessing increased high-spending domestic travellers and international tourists.

Premium Hospitality Finds Space in Spiritual Cities

The rising demand for quality accommodation has encouraged upscale hospitality brands to explore spiritual destinations more aggressively.

ITC Hotels recently signed a Fortune hotel in Vrindavan, reflecting growing confidence in pilgrimage-driven hospitality demand.

Anil Chadha Managing Director, ITC Hotels Limited said, “Vrindavan is a strategic growth market. With increasing infrastructure development and rising domestic travel, the city continues to witness a surge in demand for quality branded accommodation.”

Similarly, The Fern Hotels & Resorts expanded its presence in Ayodhya through The Fern Residency Ayodhya, Series by Marriott.

Suhail Kannampilly, Managing Director, The Fern Hotels & Resorts noted, “Ayodhya’s transformation into a globally significant spiritual destination presents a unique opportunity for us to create hospitality experiences that are both culturally rooted and contemporary.”

Growth Beyond Hotels

The rise of organized hospitality in spiritual destinations is also creating opportunities across allied sectors including restaurants, retail, transport, wellness tourism, and local experiences.

Food and beverage brands are increasingly targeting temple corridors and pilgrimage hubs because of strong daily footfall. Wellness retreats, yoga centres, Ayurveda resorts and cultural tourism experiences are also becoming integrated parts of spiritual travel itineraries.

Destinations such as Rishikesh and Haridwar are witnessing this convergence most strongly, where spirituality, wellness, and leisure tourism overlap.

The Road Ahead

India’s spiritual tourism sector is steadily evolving into one of the hospitality industry’s most promising growth engines. As infrastructure improves and traveller expectations continue to rise, the demand for branded accommodation in pilgrimage destinations is expected to accelerate further.

For hospitality brands, spiritual tourism is no longer a niche category but a strategic business opportunity offering stable occupancy, scalable franchise potential, and long-term expansion prospects.

The growing preference for organized, reliable and experience-driven stays among pilgrims is reshaping the hospitality sector, turning India’s spiritual destinations into thriving business and investment hubs for the future.
