Yuma Energy has achieved a major milestone in the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model by completing over 35 million battery swaps. The company has established more than 2,000 battery swapping stations across 400 locations in 17 Indian cities. Since its launch in February 2023, this marks a 20-fold expansion.
The company’s infrastructure supports two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and last-mile delivery vehicles, offering users the convenience of swapping batteries within minutes. This model helps overcome key barriers to electric vehicle (EV) adoption, including high upfront costs, long charging times, and range anxiety.
Muthu Subramanian, General Manager and Managing Director of Yuma Energy, said, “This growth reflects the increasing acceptance of battery swapping as a reliable urban mobility solution. We are witnessing strong engagement from both individual users and fleet operators who value efficiency and reliability.”
Yuma Energy now plans to further strengthen operations in existing markets and expand into new cities. The company’s development aligns with India’s broader electrification goals and efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
Experts believe battery swapping is emerging as a promising solution for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and delivery fleets. The government is also supporting the ecosystem through initiatives like the FAME scheme and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) guidelines to standardize battery designs. However, the model is still concentrated in metro cities, with challenges such as lack of standardization and long-term economic viability.
Still, experts emphasize that for fleet operators and urban transport, battery swapping can serve as a strong complement to charging infrastructure, accelerating EV adoption across the country.
