India has inaugurated its first solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging station integrated with second-life battery storage at Galamma Circle, near Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. The unique project is part of the Green Urban Mobility Innovation Living Lab, supported by GIZ India, BESCOM, and the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT), under the Sustainable Urban Mobility – Air Quality, Climate Action, Accessibility (SUM-ACA) program.
The RE2EV (Renewable Energy to Electric Vehicle) project was launched by Karnataka Energy Minister K.J. George. The station combines a 45 kWp rooftop solar photovoltaic system with a 100 kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), enabling round-the-clock EV charging. Stored solar energy is used during night hours and peak demand periods.
This model enhances energy efficiency, reduces pressure on the power grid, and extends the life of lithium-ion batteries—contributing to India’s goals for a circular economy and electronic waste management.
The charging hub includes nine DC fast chargers supplied by Delta Electronics India—five with 50 kW capacity and four with 30 kW. These are compatible with private, commercial, and fleet vehicles. Delta has supplied over 8,000 chargers in India and more than 3 million globally.
Karnataka currently hosts over 5,880 EV charging stations, with 4,462 located in Bengaluru Urban district. The state has added 140 new chargers in 2025 alone. The new hub can charge up to 23 vehicles at once and is strategically located in a high-demand transit zone near the airport.
Users can access the station via BESCOM’s “EV Mitra” app, which offers real-time data on charger availability and tariffs. Charging can also be initiated using QR codes with integrated WhatsApp payment options. The station features 18 fast-charging and five slow-charging points, with tariffs set lower than those at private stations.
The RE2EV project is designed as a replicable model for urban and peri-urban areas. By combining renewable energy, second-life battery use, and high-capacity charging, it promotes a sustainable and resilient EV ecosystem.
