MBRDI and TERI Launch ‘Future-In-Charge’ EV Skill Training Programme
Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) and TERI have launched the ‘Future-In-Charge’ skill training programme to build a qualified workforce for EV charging infrastructure.

Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) on Thursday launched a comprehensive skills training programme for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure operators. The initiative is designed to address skill gaps identified in their joint whitepaper “EV Charging in India: Ecosystem Perspectives and Skilling Opportunities.”

The study, which consulted 150 experts across the EV value chain, highlighted key challenges in skilling charge point operators (CPOs), including lack of hands-on training opportunities, non-standardised modules, and shortage of qualified trainers. According to the findings, nearly 50% of skill requirements for CPOs involve installation and testing of EV charging systems, along with IoT-enabled digital applications.

As part of its Sustainability Garage initiative, Mercedes-Benz launched the ‘Future-In-Charge’ programme. The course has been approved by the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) and endorsed by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). The first pilot cohort of 60 trainees has already commenced training at TERI’s Gwal Pahari campus, combining classroom learning with hands-on exposure.

“Sustainability goes beyond technology; it is about people. With ‘Future-In-Charge,’ we are not only bridging the skills gap but also encouraging systemic change in EV infrastructure,” said Manu Saale, Managing Director & CEO, MBRDI.

Dr. Vibha Dhawan, Director General of TERI, added, “As India accelerates towards clean mobility, building a skilled workforce for EV charging infrastructure is critical. This initiative connects industry needs with youth talent in a future-ready way.”

The programme will gradually expand across India in collaboration with charge point operators, academic institutions, and industry partners, supporting India’s transition to sustainable electric mobility.
