Tata-backed online grocery and quick commerce platform BigBasket has announced a major leadership reshuffle, appointing Amit Nanda as its new Chief Executive Officer while elevating Vishal Das to the role of Chief Buying & Merchandising Officer.
Nanda succeeds at a pivotal stage in the company’s growth trajectory, with BigBasket reporting nearly ₹9,900 crore in revenue in FY25. The company currently serves over 30 million customers, operates around 850 dark stores, and has established a presence in more than 60 cities across India.
Co-founders Hari Menon and Vipul Parekh will continue to support the business as board members and mentors, working closely with Nanda and the leadership team on the company’s long-term strategic direction.
Nanda joins BigBasket after spending more than 11 years at Amazon, where he most recently served as Director, Selling Partner Services. Prior to Amazon, he held leadership positions at Hindustan Unilever and Citibank, bringing over two decades of experience across e-commerce, consumer goods, and financial services.
Commenting on his appointment, Nanda said he was excited to build on the trust BigBasket has earned among millions of consumers and leverage the combined strengths of the company’s customer-centric approach and the Tata Group’s legacy. He also highlighted the potential of the company’s private label portfolio and expressed his commitment to driving the next phase of growth alongside the existing leadership team.
Alongside the CEO appointment, BigBasket has elevated Vishal Das to Chief Buying & Merchandising Officer. In his expanded role, Das will lead the company’s buying and merchandising strategy, focusing on category growth, strengthening private brands, enhancing merchandising capabilities, and delivering greater value to customers.
A long-time BigBasket executive, Das has played a key role in scaling several high-growth categories and strengthening the company’s merchandising ecosystem. Most recently, he served as Vice President – Group Category, leading multiple strategic initiatives that contributed to the company’s growth.
Before joining BigBasket, Das held a series of leadership roles at ITC Limited, including Head of Buying & Merchandising, Group Category Manager, and National Category Manager – General Merchandise. He also gained retail management experience with Kmart and Choithrams.
The leadership appointments come as BigBasket continues to strengthen its position in India’s highly competitive online grocery and quick commerce market, while expanding its customer base, dark store network, and private-label business.
