Bharti Enterprises, led by billionaire Sunil Mittal, along with global private equity firm Warburg Pincus, is set to acquire a 49 per cent stake in Haier India, according to industry sources. The proposed investment marks a significant development in India’s fast-expanding consumer appliances market.
The deal will see the two investors jointly pick up a minority holding in the Indian arm of Chinese home appliances major Haier, which sells products ranging from refrigerators and washing machines to air conditioners and small household appliances. The move is expected to strengthen Haier India’s growth ambitions while giving Bharti a deeper foothold in the consumer durables space.
People familiar with the discussions said the transaction reflects strong confidence in long-term demand for home appliances in India, driven by rising incomes, premiumisation trends, and growing penetration in smaller cities and towns. The fresh capital is also expected to support investments in product development, manufacturing capabilities, and supply chain efficiencies.
Haier India will continue to operate under its current management structure, with the incoming shareholders providing strategic and financial support. Details related to valuation and transaction timelines are still under discussion and will be finalised after regulatory approvals.
Industry observers say the partnership could intensify competition in the consumer appliances sector and accelerate Haier India’s plans to scale operations and expand its market presence.
