The growth story of India continues to unfold, and it’s becoming broader and more exciting with every visit: Walmart Global CEO Doug McMillon

Walmart is intensifying its efforts to source $10 billion worth of goods annually from India by 2027, reaffirmed Global CEO Doug McMillon during his visit to the country this week. This marks McMillon’s second visit in under 18 months, underscoring the growing importance of India in Walmart’s global strategy.

“We’re working closely with our supplier community to reach the $10 billion target,” McMillon said. “The growth story of India continues to unfold, and it’s becoming broader and more exciting with every visit.”

Walmart had first announced its sourcing commitment in December 2020, focusing on categories like apparel, food, toys, and other consumer goods. Over the past two decades, Walmart has sourced more than $30 billion worth of products from India, and the momentum continues to build.

During his two-day tour, McMillon reviewed Walmart’s progress in exports, digital innovation, and supply chain development. He interacted with Indian entrepreneurs supported by Walmart Vriddhi, the retailer’s supplier development program aimed at empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

McMillon also praised Walmart’s Indian e-commerce and fintech ventures. “What Flipkart and PhonePe have accomplished is inspiring — they’ve brought innovation, speed, and scale to the Indian market,” he said. PhonePe recently crossed 600 million registered users and now supports over 40 million merchants across India.

Walmart International CEO Kath McLay echoed the sentiment, highlighting the company’s 20-year partnership with India and the success of Vriddhi in fostering community and business growth.

Flipkart CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy added, “Walmart has been a part of India’s transformation over the past decade and is committed to driving the next phase of inclusive growth across every corner of the country.”
