Spykar Bets Big on Franchising and Tier 2 Growth to Fuel Next-Gen Denim Revolution
Spykar's CEO Sanjay Vakharia shares how cities like Nashik, Bhopal, and Guwahati are emerging as growth engines, how franchise partnerships are unlocking speed and agility, and why Spykar is building a future-proof, omnichannel retail network.

In a strategic pivot rooted in local expertise and consumer-first design, youth fashion powerhouse Spykar is doubling down on a 100% franchise-led expansion model to scale rapidly across India’s Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. With denim innovation, data-driven design, and retail tech at its core, the brand is blending aspirational fashion with regional reach. Spykar CEO Sanjay Vakharia shares how cities like Nashik, Bhopal, and Guwahati are emerging as growth engines, how franchise partnerships are unlocking speed and agility, and why Spykar is building a future-proof, omnichannel retail network that resonates with India’s digital-native Gen Z and Alpha shoppers.

Spykar has been a youth fashion icon for decades. What’s driving your next phase of growth?
Our next phase is fueled by a strong mix of consumer insight, tech adoption, and product innovation. We’re focusing heavily on customer retention, expanding our omnichannel presence, and rolling out new denim fits and fabric technologies that resonate with today’s youth. Gen Z and Gen Alpha are shaping culture—and we’re listening closely to create what excites them.

Which regions are you targeting for offline expansion in FY2025–26? Are Tier 2 and 3 towns central to your retail strategy?
Tier 2 and 3 cities are crucial to our retail expansion. Cities like Nashik, Bhopal, Indore, Bhubaneswar, and Guwahati are showing strong growth not just in footfalls, but in brand love and purchase intent. These markets are no longer emerging, they’re leading the charge in fashion retail growth.

How important are franchise partnerships in Spykar’s expansion journey? Are you looking to grow via more franchise-owned exclusive brand outlets (EBOs)?
Franchise partnerships are foundational to our retail model. They bring local expertise and agility, especially in high-potential emerging markets. Yes, we’re actively open to expanding via franchise-led EBOs, provided the partners align with our brand vision and quality benchmarks.

What’s the current ratio of company-owned vs. franchised stores—and how do you see this evolving?
Currently, our entire EBO network is 100% franchise-led. This approach allows us to scale rapidly, stay operationally lean, and leverage local intelligence. We plan to continue this franchise-driven strategy while ensuring consistency through robust training, tech integration, and brand support.

How do you ensure a consistent brand experience across your stores and digital channels?
Consistency stems from a strong central framework—covering visual merchandising, staff training, inventory management, and brand communication. Whether it’s an in-store experience or a digital ad, the Spykar tone is bold, stylish, and youth-centric across every consumer touchpoint.

How is Spykar using AI and analytics in design, supply chain, and customer engagement?
AI plays a critical role in improving decision-making across functions. From forecasting demand and identifying design gaps to precision targeting in digital campaigns, data is helping us build a sharper, smarter fashion ecosystem.

Are you exploring AI-based personalization online—such as virtual try-ons or style chatbots?
Yes, personalization is a priority. We’re actively exploring AR-based virtual try-ons, intelligent style suggestions, and chat-based shopping assistance to enhance convenience and make online shopping more intuitive and immersive.

What role does predictive analytics play in your inventory and trend planning?
Predictive analytics is now central to how we manage inventory and forecast trends. It helps reduce overstock, improve sell-through, and ensure supply chain efficiency. It also keeps us ahead of consumer preferences, enabling smarter product planning.

Do you see synergies between quick commerce and fashion, particularly for essential wear?
Definitely. Essentials like trunks, socks, and T-shirts often see impulsive or urgent demand. Quick commerce platforms offer the perfect distribution channel, provided the delivery quality aligns with our brand promise.

Would Spykar consider deeper partnerships with platforms like Blinkit or Zepto?
We’re already live on Zepto, and the initial response is encouraging. It’s a great way to meet customers where they are, especially for last-minute fashion needs. We’re open to scaling this further, depending on category fit and customer feedback.

How are Gen Z and Gen Alpha influencing your product and brand approach?
These generations are value-driven, expressive, and digital-first. They expect fashion to be a reflection of identity, not just a product. This is pushing us to focus on campaigns with emotional relevance, social-first formats, and bold designs that echo individuality.

How do you balance trend-led fast fashion with sustainability?
We believe style and sustainability can coexist. We’ve made significant progress with ozone wash techniques, water recycling, and eco-friendly chemicals in denim manufacturing. We’re investing in durable materials and timeless design—moving toward a more conscious fashion cycle.

What fashion trends do you foresee shaping denim and casualwear in the next 12–18 months?
Relaxed fits will continue to dominate—think wide-leg, cargo, and utility styles. Lightweight, stretch-infused denim, and experimental washes will also grow. Athleisure-inspired hybrids and comfort-first silhouettes will define mainstream choices.

What are your top 3 priorities as CEO over the next 12 months?

  • Deepening customer loyalty and community engagement
  • Accelerating retail expansion in Tier 2 and 3 cities
  • Strengthening tech and data capabilities to future-proof the brand

How do you see Spykar evolving over the next five years?
Spykar will continue to lead in youth fashion, but with sharper personalization, India-centric storytelling, and an expanded product portfolio for diverse occasions. We want to be the most loved Indian denim brand not just for what we offer, but how we connect with our customers.
