How AI is Powering the Next Wave of Business Innovation
From boardrooms to shop floors, AI is no longer just a buzzword—it’s becoming the operating system of modern Indian business. Marketing, retail, logistics, and even luxury—every sector is getting an AI upgrade.

In just four years, India’s artificial intelligence (AI) market has nearly doubled—leaping from $3.2 billion in 2020 to $6.05 billion in 2024. But that’s just the beginning. According to a new report titled "Artificial Intelligence and Competition" by the Competition Commission of India (CCI), the market is expected to skyrocket to a whopping $31.94 billion by 2031.

From dynamic ad campaigns to predictive logistics and AI-grown diamonds, the pace at which AI is weaving into the country’s industrial fabric is nothing short of phenomenal. And as India positions itself for the next tech-led decade, it's clear: AI is not the future—it’s the now.

The AI-Powered Marketing Machine

Forget traditional campaign cycles and guesswork. In India’s fast-evolving digital marketing landscape, AI is the new creative director, strategist, and analyst—rolled into one.

With a projected market growth from $1.27 billion in 2025 to $15.7 billion by 2032, AI-led marketing is at the forefront of the transformation.

Take Spotify’s globally viral “Wrapped” campaign—a masterclass in how AI can turn raw user data into emotional storytelling. Or Nykaa, where an AI-powered virtual assistant helps shoppers find the perfect product, book consultations, and even receive personalised recommendations in real time.

Legacy players aren’t sitting idle either. Coca-Cola’s “Create Real Magic” platform, built in collaboration with OpenAI and Bain & Company, lets consumers co-create digital artwork for potential inclusion in real campaigns—blending AI with participatory branding.

But it’s not just about flashy campaigns. AI now drives programmatic ad buying, hyper-targeted messaging, and real-time sentiment analysis, helping brands reach the right people with the right message—at exactly the right time.

Retail’s Reinvention, courtesy AI

As AI reshapes how we buy, shop, and sell, Indian retailers are in the midst of a transformation unlike any before. Whether it’s a lipstick, a light bulb, or a lab-grown diamond, AI is redefining the retail playbook—from supply chains to storefronts.

According to the CCI report, the AI market in retail and e-commerce has grown from $0.33 billion in 2019 to $0.86 billion in 2024, with projections reaching $15.7 billion by 2032.

For IGP.com, one of India’s fastest-growing digital gifting platforms, AI isn’t just a backend tool—it’s central to their identity. “At IGP, technology isn’t just an enabler, it’s the heartbeat of our business,” says Tarun Joshi, Founder & CEO, IGP.com. “Our dark store network, powered by predictive demand analytics, enables 30-minute hyperlocal deliveries in over 30 cities. AI simplifies product discovery, powers recommendations, and ensures the perfect gift shows up at the perfect moment.”

Even high-value luxury brands are embracing the AI advantage. Limelight Lab Grown Diamonds, a pioneer in India’s lab-grown jewellery market, blends cutting-edge tech with craftsmanship. “Technology is integral to Limelight’s DNA—from CVD diamond growth to digital retail platforms and customer engagement,” says Pooja Sheth Madhavan, Founder & MD. “We leverage advanced automation, AI-driven techniques, and seamless omnichannel solutions to ensure operational excellence and a superior customer experience.”

Meanwhile, AI is gaining traction even in traditional retail and F&B ecosystems. Petpooja, a leading restaurant management platform, has recently secured new funding to accelerate its AI capabilities—signalling the rising demand for intelligent POS systems that can predict demand, automate inventory, and streamline kitchen operations.

This push reflects a larger movement across India’s retail landscape where AI is not just enhancing efficiency but becoming a strategic growth engine for digital-first and omnichannel players alike.

Logistics Getting Smart and Fast

Behind every online purchase is a complex logistical ballet—and AI is now choreographing the entire performance. From real-time fleet tracking to predictive delivery routes, logistics has become one of the most AI-saturated sectors in India.

According to the CCI report and NASSCOM data, 88% of logistics firms are already using AI to manage inventory, forecast demand, and optimise delivery routes. The sector has grown from $0.14 billion in 2019 to $0.40 billion in 2024, and is expected to hit $6.77 billion by 2032.

The results? Lower operational costs, higher fulfilment rates, and better customer experiences.

Algorithmic Power Meets Legal Precision

With such explosive growth, however, comes a new set of challenges: data monopolies, opaque algorithms, and the risk of digital-era anti-competitive behavior. The CCI’s landmark study doesn’t shy away from this.

“The CCI has undertaken a comprehensive, in-depth analysis of AI’s role across sectors, examining both pro-competitive benefits and potential risks to fair competition,” says Aparna Mehra, Partner – Competition Law at Trilegal. “Rather than rushing into regulation, the CCI’s approach is thoughtful and consultative. By engaging with stakeholders and promoting voluntary compliance, the study lays the groundwork for a balanced and innovation-friendly competition framework.”

She highlights one of the report’s most progressive recommendations: self-audits. Encouraging companies to internally assess their AI tools for competitive risks is a move toward “responsible innovation,” now echoed in markets across the globe—from the US and France to China and Japan.

India’s legislative framework is also evolving. Key initiatives include Competition (Amendment) Act, 2023 – introduces deal-value thresholds and faster resolutions, Digital Competition Bill, 2024 – aims to curb anti-competitive conduct in digital markets and Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA), 2023 – reinforces privacy and data governance norms for ethical AI use.

India’s AI-First Future

In this unfolding AI revolution, the message is loud and clear: businesses that embrace AI today are shaping the economy of tomorrow.

By 2032, AI-powered marketing applications alone are projected to contribute over $15 billion to India’s economy. But success won’t come from mere adoption. It will depend on how businesses balance automation with accountability, data with ethics, and efficiency with empathy.

The true winners will be those who can humanise machine intelligence—blending data-driven precision with storytelling, creativity, and cultural relevance. India’s AI decade is here. The question is no longer if your business needs AI. It’s how soon, how smart, and how responsibly.
