India’s Music Education Franchises are Creating New Avenues for Entrepreneurs

The cultural tale of India’s music is very well-known in the world. The ragas and the rasas not only reflect upon the cultural richness of the Indian classical music but also recite the story of how deeply music is embedded in the Indian soil.

Despite the great legacy of the art, it is surprising to know that music is considered as a hobby for many Indian music-lovers and not as a career option. While many schools still have music as a co-curricular activity, a few institutions have taken a step towards making music education syllabus-oriented and career-oriented. India’s music education scenario is being transformed by brands like RCA Music Academy that offer a curriculum for their students and are expanding their reach via franchising.

Music Education: A Less Explored Opportunity

The music education prevails in India since ancient times when ‘Hindustani Gharanas’ started the tradition of guru-shishya. India had been home to the two types of music schools: Hindustani classical music (including the northern, eastern and central region) and Carnatic music (covering the peninsular region of India). The concept of guru-shishya traveled down for years, making music education a rather unorganized market. K-12 school systems do not focus on music education as much as they do on academic education.

When we talk about the overall scenario of music education in Indian schools and other educational institutions, there is not much to talk about. In the name of music education, students attend music classes, which are taught as a vocational subject and do not even have a syllabus. The music period is like a recreational period where one can recite poems or sing whatever they feel like. So, music education in schools doesn’t have much to contribute to the overall music education industry, that’s why it helps in creating avenues for many entrepreneurs in the field of music.

Those who feel inclined towards music opt for private institutions to learn music and musical instruments. If we talk about the evolution of music institutions, Indians used to learn classical music for a long time. But as time flew by, the challenging style of authentic Indian classical music lost its touch from the hearts of Indian music lovers and the infusion of western sounds and Bollywood become more prominent. With the new age demands, music education evolved in India to a great extent, hence the education system changed too.

Now that evolution has happened, a mere hobby for many people, music has become a promising business for entrepreneurs who are versed in the art. So, many music institutions have evolved into proper schools and make students versed with the art so that they can be future-ready in terms of employment opportunities in the field of music.

Music Education Franchise: An Organised Market

Music education has become all modernized, brands like RCA Music Academy have realized the potential of music education as many youngsters are now willing to take music as a professional career. With the ever-growing demand for music institutions offering vocal-learning and instrument-learning courses, brands are coming up with the specialized curriculum for students so that they can gain the nuances of music and become industry-ready. Franchising the brand is helping entrepreneurs in expanding their reach more efficiently as the brands inculcate different franchise models suiting their business model.

In conversation with Franchise India, Keerti Sharma, Chief Finance Officer, RCA Music Academy, sheds some light on their franchise models and how franchising is helping them in revolutionising the music education in India. “We started franchising our business in 2016 and our first franchise did very well. It actually got a ROI in just 17 months, so the modern turned out very well for us,” says Sharma.

Talking about her franchise model, Keerti elaborates, “We are selling music school as a whole, and have two different models in it. The first model has all the instruments in it and the other one has a few selected instruments, which have more scope for people from a career perspective. So, franchisee with less investment capacity can start with the smaller version and can expand in the future as their wish.”

Typical Franchise Requirement

The unique selling proposition of a music school franchise is that it is a low investment business opportunity. While investing in a franchised outlet of an already established brand, a lot of errands can get cut-off.  As per sources, an established music school brand offers a franchise opportunity in an investment of just Rs 20-30 lakhs in which, franchisees are provided with complete guidance and training to run their outlets and are given sales, marketing, technical and operational support.

Being a low-investment opportunity itself and combined with a cost-effective business model like franchising, the music school franchise becomes a lucrative opportunity for entrepreneurs.
