GIVING HEALTHCARE THE SPIN OF SUSTAINABILITY

AMEERA SHAH is the kind of woman entrepreneur who will never back out of a venture even if the odds are high. The growth of Metropolis Healthcare is testimony to her spirit of adventure.

GIVING HEALTHCARE THE SPIN OF SUSTAINABILITY

It certainly must call for a lot of business acumen to grow a business from sales of Rs 7 crore to over Rs 650 crore but that’s something Ameera Shah has in plenty. In fact, ever since she took up the management of Metropolis Healthcare from her father in 2001, Ameera has been on a trailblazing journey. Having graduated in finance from University of Texas in 2001, Ameera, who is the only non-doctor in a family of doctors, realised at a very early stage that big companies were not her thing and that she did not want to engage in making money without creating anything worthwhile.

Ameera has challenged and defeated big buyout deals, boardroom battle and multiple acquisitions. Back in 2014, when Metropolis Healthcare investor Warburg Pincus wanted to sell its 27% stake in her company, Ameera, on sighting no buyers, decided to buy Warburg Pincus’ stake in her own name, despite the risk of personal debt. Believing in her capability to drive the business forward, Ameera took the ownership of the company and expanded it from a single lab in Gamdevi, Mumbai to a chain of over 101 labs and 1,800 collection centres across 350 cities and 7countries, processing over 4,500 varieties of tests.

THE RIGHT MANTRA

Her success mantra is to grow a business which is highly sustainable and sticky and provides long-term growth, ensuring profitability. The company is planning to add 800 collection centres and around 10 laboratories by the end of FY 2019.
