Anytime Fitness has seen a fast growth in every Asian market it entered including Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and India. The brand plans to take the gym count to 100 by 2018 in India.
During his recent visit to India, John Kersh, VP- International Development, Anytime Fitness LLC shared a dialogue with Ekta Sharma Verma about his brand's plans in India and expansion strategies.
Is this the first time you are visiting India? What's the take back?
I have visited India many times, and India is a lovely country. Health penetration is very much required in the country and that is the reason we see it as a potential country for our brand.
Franchising allows for fast growth of the Anytime Fitness brand, but it also has a special element: Our franchisees are personally invested. They have "skin in the game", as we say in America which means they are very motivated to ensure their business is successful. They participate in the risk, and in the success.
What is the current store count for your brand?
At present, we have 2,700 locations open in 21 countries on five continents. Of those, approximately 50 are owned either by Anytime Fitness or our master franchisees. The rest are independently owned by franchisees. Also of note, more than 35 per cent of our franchisees own more than one location. In India, We have eight franchise fitness centres, and we plan to reach 25 by end of 2015.
Is India a potential market for your business, with so many Indian/International brands coming in?
Of course. We are extremely excited about the potential for Anytime Fitness in India, and we look forward to being a positive force to improving the health of the Indian population.
What trends/ strategies your brand is following for franchise development?
We work with local partners - master franchisees - to ensure that we properly address local customs and consumer tastes.
Which all cities are you tapping for expansion?
We are targeting pan-India, with major focus on Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore and the entire Punjab.
