Managing franchise operations for Tanishq jewellery and Titan watch by the TATA Group is all that is keeping M K Dattaraj, Franchisee, Tanishq jewellery and Titan watch, Bangalore, busy and successful. In a candid conversation with Yamini Sunwar, he shares his entrepreneurial journey and talks about his franchising success mantra.
What inspired you to take the franchise of Titan?
It was in the year 1989 that we responded to an advertisement by Titan inviting franchisees to set up an exclusive Titan showroom. We responded to this advertisement as we wanted to diversify into a retail business. More importantly, we were excited about the category of watches and in associating with a Tata group company.
How has your journey been with Titan? How has the growth been so far?
We have had a fantastic journey with Titan Industries Limited since the year 1989. It has been a great learning experience and a truly rewarding association. We have grown from a single watch showroom with about five people in 1989 to a team of 120 people involved in jewellery and watch retailing at four locations in Bangalore.
Share with us the most important element to be a successful franchisee. What kind of training and support does your franchisor offer you?
A good training and support system is crucial for a franchisee to become successful. Titan Industries Limited has been fantastic on both training and support. The company is always working on new and innovative methods to train our frontline sales staff. The sales people at Tanishq undergo training in the factory for one week to learn the jewellery manufacturing process. In addition, the company makes significant effort in training senior sales people through refresher courses and new programmes. There is also an annual contest organised by the company to recognise great performers based on their in-store performances and behavioural tests. The company also conducts routine mystery audits to apprise us of our customer service levels and shares feedback offered by customers. Apart from training there is a great support system in place for information technology, visual merchandising, customer acquisition and retention and project management when starting a new store.
What is the best thing about your franchise brand and the franchisor? Where do you see yourself five years down the line?
Titan Industries Limited is a truly great company built on a very strong foundation of values instituted by the TATA Group. It is a matter of great honour to be associated with Titan Industries Limited, a TATA Group company. We are very fortunate as associates since the management at Titan has maintained a win-win approach and most importantly, they are great people. TITAN watches and TANISHQ jewellery have been true game-changers in the watch and jewellery business.
What kind of potential do you see in the industry?
We believe the jewellery and watch business will grow at a healthy pace in the coming years due to increasing disposable incomes of people. Also, there is a significant shift towards buying jewellery from a great brand like 'TANISHQ' due to factors of design, quality and trust.
