A unique journey of Dame Asha Khemka, who is now the Principal and CEO of West Nottinghamshire College, has won the year’s Asian Businesswoman of the Year award in Birmingham, UK. With an aim to make Students global citizens, the journey for Vidya Yeravedkar started out of her father’s dream to scale the Symbiosis University across the globe. And yes, she did it!

Gowri Ishwaran
Recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri Award in the year 2004, Gowri Ishwaran is an innovative educationist with over 30 years of experience in the field of Education. She has brought a paradigm shift on how education needs to be imparted to young students, owing to her clear understanding of the needs of growing children.
She was the founding Principal of Sanskriti School, New Delhi, which is counted among the leading schools of India, achieving the distinction within a short span of 10 years. She has also been instrumental in developing, organizing and conducting training programmes and seminars for students and teachers, and actively disseminating her experiences and learning.
As CEO of The Global Education & Leadership Foundation, Mrs. Ishwaran has been instrumental in developing today’s youth to become change makers.
Asha Khemka
From the small, sleepy town of Sitamarhi in Bihar, it has been a unique journey for Asha Khemka, who arrived in Britain without any English language skills and went on to change the lives of thousands of British students.
Awarded often for her work in the field of education, Khemka was honoured with one of Britain’s top civilian awards, Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, which is the female equivalent of knighthood. She was awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 2008.
Nearly 40 years ago, Asha came to the UK with her husband and kids, totally clueless about the place. In the initial days, she would learn English from TV shows and by talking with other young mothers like herself. Eventually, her insatiable hunger for education made her get a business degree from Cardiff University. That was just the beginning.
She took over as principal and CEO of West Nottinghamshire College, one of the largest colleges in the UK. In 2013, she was awarded Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, one of the UK's top civilian's awards, the female equivalent of knighthood. She is the second woman of Indian origin to have received it.
Vidya Yeravedkar
Vidya Yeravdekar was happy running her hospital in Pune with no plans of joining her father, S B Mujumdar's Symbiosis Society. But it was a five-year stint with the Ministry of Health in Muscat that prompted the post graduate in gynaecology and obstetrics to step into the world of academics and education. Seeing "widespread health literacy" in that country, she decided to implement it in India and the Symbosis family was the first nurturing ground for her ideas. In 1997, she set up the Symbiosis Centre for Healthcare at the Symbiosis Society to provide free healthcare to the institute's students and staff and proved to be her entry into the family-run Symbiosis Society.
Today, the Symbiosis International University has students from 85 countries and has forged active collaborations with 54 Universities from around the world to share programmes and courses.
