Currently there are about 24 departments of the government that are involved in skilling
Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship will look to consolidate the workings of various departments and ministries under its ambit to ensure greater harmony, coordination and optimal results, according to a report published in Economic Times.
Currently there are about 24 departments of the government that are involved in skilling, the report states further.
"Will all these departments keep doing what they have been doing till now? The Ministry of Skill does not intend to bull in the china shop but with the passage of time we will be upsetting some apple carts. The mandate given to us by the government is to be responsible for all skilling in the country. We have a wide mandate given by the Union Cabinet and puts lots of responsibility on us. We have too much of cacophony. Let us try and make harmonic orchestra out of it," Sunil Arora, Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship told ET.
Recently the Minister of Skill Development, Entrepreneurship, Youth Affairs & Sports, Sarbananda Sonowal stated that as his Ministry reaches maturity he would like the buck to stop at his door when it came to skill development.
Arora said that all new Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) in the country will come under the ambit of the Skills Ministry and there are plans to set up some 2500 of them across the country. The Secretary added that draft new skill development policy is now open for comments and it will look to address various issues raised by stakeholders, define what constitutes skilling, what constitutes up-skilling and frame common standards.
