Indian Angel Network has announced investment in Process 9, which offers online translation and transliteration from English to Indic via a cloud based API. The API integrates with the customer’s web or mobile based applications. Process 9 currently supports local languages like Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Bengali languages.
The investment was led by IAN, Alok Sharma, CEO of Nature Eco Ventures and ex-CEO of Apple India. Alok is amongst the lead investors and has joined Process 9’s board. IAN Investors in Process 9 include Kris Gopalakrishnan, Saurabh Srivastava, Ajai Chowdhry.
India is considered to be a linguistic exception with English as the official language. 99.5 per cent of Indians list one of the Indian languages as their mother tongue, whereas, about 7 per cent list English as their second language. Internet and mobile are making cross border trade easier every day and over a million mobile apps on Android and iOS are available for download to anyone anywhere. These apps need to be localized in the user’s language as more than 95 per cent of the population in India still prefers to use their local language.
“To fill in this demand, Process 9 will bring in a paradigm change to the Internet and Mobile industry – all the websites that are in English will become accessible to the non English literate consumer or audience. This will create an exponential market access to these Internet and Mobile companies creating a larger foot print than envisaged. The Process 9 team of Rakesh, Devendra and Vidushi brings in a complementary mix of competencies and experience,” said the press statement.
The founders of Process 9, Rakesh Kapoor and Devendra Joshi have been part of the Indic ecosystem for over 2 decades and have been involved in development of fonts, keyboarding software, spell checks, transliteration etc. They have also commercialized these solutions for media and the Govt. Process 9 products introduce Indic keypads, fonts, predictive text entry tools and UI translation services to the mobile and online world.
Alok Sharma CEO of Nature Eco who co-invests with IAN said, "I believe Process 9 is a revolutionary idea emerged out of the necessity of the Indian market for a localized customer interface. I see a great potential in the startup and the team and with their unique expertise, Process 9 has an opportunity to be the market leader in India and globally.”
Rakesh Kapoor, Director, Process 9, commented, “With Process 9 we aim to enable our customers to reach the top 35% non-English literate population of India quickly. IAN’s support is the first round of funding that we have received and will be used to further develop IndicaWave and IndicaMobile products and to scale the delivery capacity of our translation business. We plan on investing in digital marketing and acquisition of key customers and to further enhance the technology to improve quality and efficiency of its services.”
