Unfortunately, there’s been a significant increase in the number of child abuse cases in recent years. Looking specifically at the incidents of rape against children, an 82 percent increase in the number of cases in one year was reported in recent years. Thus, appropriate knowledge is empowering for children, and might well be the difference between a child becoming one of these statistics or not.

Currently, the foremost factor parents seek while enrolling their child in a school, is their safety. With an increase of horrifying cases of child abuse in schools, starting personal safety education in your school will not only benefit the students but will also increase your profits.

Here are the following reasons why you should start personal safety education in your school.

Prevent Risk of Sexual Abuse                                                                                                

Most of the children with a history of sexual abuse, do not realise it until a certain age. In order to prevent the risk of sexual abuse, Personal Safety Education will promote resilience in children by using empowerment strategies, clear communication and awareness of “safe” behaviours. Moreover, it will promote life-enriching rather than life-depleting experiences.

Lack of sex education

Even today, sex education makes Indians uncomfortable and child sexual abuse is a topic that is equally taboo. Personal Safety Education will help people feel more comfortable to talk about it. Guilt and shame are the factors which hold back a survivor. Children should be taught that it is okay to speak about it. Personal safety education is also important because it gives kids the vocabulary to describe if their boundaries have been violated or if they have been abused.

Emotional trauma

The most important thing that personal safety education teaches children is that if someone breaks the body safety rules, it is not their fault.  The one thing that all abuse survivors have in common is emotional pain. Many have faced harrowing ordeals about being sexually abused, emotionally abused, and neglected. It is not just important for preventing child sexual abuse and increasing reporting, but also to build self-confidence, a healthy body image, and gender sensitivity.
