Is Gamification the Future of the Education System?

Gaming has always been like a rival of learning and education. Most of the children are really fond of playing rather than studying as playing and gaming seem more interesting than focusing on books to get passed in examinations.

In the recent years, technology has changed the education sector completely, making education more fun and child friendly; therefore, new concepts are integrated into the education sector. One such new concept is Gamification, which has become widely popular among the millennial.

Read on to know what exactly Gamification is and how it is expected to change the Indian education sector.

Gamification: A New Approach

Gamification is a concept that applies video game designs in learning contexts in order to motivate and engage students in learning activities. Gamification comes with many aspects of learning that captivate students and enables them to acquire all the knowledge in with the help of gaming.

The games include narratives, point-based reward systems, collaborative problem solving, trial and error, opportunities for leveling up, and various other aspects of games, which help the students to understand the concepts, make learning more interesting and generate a competitive spirit in students.

These games are generally about problem solving, and this works as a great tool for teaching, learning and assessing. The games are considered to help students focus, retain information and improve their overall performance.

Gamification appeals to the students as today’s generation is quite used to play video games and this recreation of gaming into learning games is a fun way for them to learn new things without getting bored. Unlike traditional school systems where the command of education is in the teachers’ hands, gaming enables students to get more control in their choices to learn things.

Bringing Gamification to Classrooms

As technology has intervened in the field of education, schools are more forthcoming in adapting to these technologies. Gamification could easily be adopted in schools due to its multi-dimensional facilities.

  • Grading could become very convenient through gamification wherein points, bonuses, achievements and badges acquired in gaming could be used to assess the level of the student’s understanding of the subject.
  • Treasure hunts, quests, and other interactive activities could also help gamify homework, and could motivate students to increase engagement even after school hours.
  • Organizing inter-school gaming tournaments could be lucrative as it adds to the competitive spirit along with effective learning.
  • Converting their home assignments and homework into Youtube videos, websites and blogs could help students to stay updated with new trends as well as be motivated about their studies.
  • Through gamification, the conventional image of the schools as a traditional institution could be busted and students would be more willing to study.
