How Fictions Like Game Of Thrones And Avatar Creating Opportunities In The Education Biz

“Hash yer dothrae chek asshekh” If you know what this means, then you’ve already mastered a fictional language of Game of Thrones.

Learning a new language can be tough, and takes a lot of time and effort. Many of the languages that are made up for television and books are not just gibberish. Few have been developed into fully functioning living languages, some even by linguistic professionals. These fictional languages are widely popular. People are seriously considering learning these languages and developing their creative skills. Various institutes and learning portals are now offering courses to learn these languages. Let’s take a look at how these fictional languages have created business opportunities in the education sector.

Dothraki

George RR Martin created few words of Dothraki language for nomadic horse-rearing people in his novel ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’. But it was popularized when Linguist David J. Peterson developed the Dothraki language for HBO Series ‘Game of Thrones’ (GoT). With the increasing demand for learning the language, Peterson published an official Dothraki dictionary for the fans. GoT enjoys a huge worldwide popularity, and it became evident when US University announced the Dothraki language as their new course. The course became a huge success among students.

Klingon

Klingon is one of the most well-known fictional languages. It was created by linguist Marc Okrand as the language of the warrior Klingon race on the television show ‘Star Trek’.  Okrand published several books about the language. Over years, it has got so well developed that there’s an actual Klingon Language Institute (KLI) in Pennsylvania, USA, which holds a yearly seminar to provide a platform for new people to learn the language.

Elvish

Elvish language was the language spoken by people of middle earth in the movie ‘Lord of the Rings’. J.R.R Tolkien, being linguistic, developed the Elvish language before he even started to write The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings trilogy. People acknowledged his broad invention of a really beautiful sounding “language” which he made from scratch. Therefore, a number of books are available online to learn the grammar and syntax of this subject. An official dictionary is also available which is widely popular.

Na’vi

The Na’vi language is the constructed language of the indigenous race of Pandora in the movie ‘Avatar’. Director James Cameron worked with linguist Dr. Paul Frommer to develop this language with the lexicon of more than 100 words. After the humungous success of Avatar, Frommer continued to add more words and grammatical rules to the official website of the language. Many books are published to learn Na’vi and have been a huge hit. Also, many online portals offer courses to learn this fictional language of Pandora.

Valyrian

Valyrian is another fictional language spoken in the famous TV series ‘Game of Thrones’. Linguist David J. Peterson created the High Valyrian Language. He also developed its derivative languages, Astapori and Meereenese Valyrian. On the show, Valyrian is spoken by the popular character Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons. Witnessing the growing demand for learning the language, famous learning app Duolingo has started a course for it. People are also using several books and sites for learning the grammar and phonology of the Valyrian language.
