How Facebook Is Promoting Digital Safety By Launching Digital Literacy Lessons

In a bid to train three lakh people by end of 2018 and make online space safer for the users, Facebook recently launched a digital literacy library in six languages.

This move is a part of Facebook's South Asia Safety Summit where the Ministry of Women and Child Development together with Facebook gathered a group of leaders in safety and technology.

They were joined by over 70 organizations from five countries, including India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.

Why Digital Literacy Library?

India is a diverse country with 23 constitutionally recognized official languages. Only 12.18% of the total population speaks English. Despite this language barrier, there are over 200 million young online users in India. This makes them susceptible to cybercrime, child and women trafficking.

The main aim behind starting the digital safety lessons in various languages is to reach the majority of the Indian population.

Thus, to enjoy the digital technology safely, there is a need to build the required skills and the digital safety lessons will help to train the Indian netizens.

Articulating on the importance of digital safety, Antigone Davis, Global Head for Safety, Facebook, said, "The launch of the Digital Literacy Library, the child safety hackathon and several offline training programmes we run in partnership with local experts, reaffirm our seriousness in combating online abuse."

Targeting Women and Young Children

Women and youth are considered the most vulnerable to cybercrime. Facebook is focussing on this section of netizens to train them about digital safety.

"The trainings are targeted primarily towards women and youth and are being done in collaboration with organisations such as Cyber Peace Foundation, Learning Links Foundation, Internet and Mobile Association of India, Gaon Connection, and Centre for Social Research, to name a few," stated Davis.

Key Features of Digital Library

The ready-to-use lessons in the Library are drawn from the Youth and Media team at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. It will be a resource for educators looking to address digital literacy and help young people build the skills needed to safely enjoy digital technology.
