College and career guidance and counseling programs aim to help students make more informed and better educational and career choices. Among other things, programs offer information on high school course offerings, career options, the type of academic and occupational training needed to succeed in the workplace, and postsecondary opportunities that are associated with their field of interest. Programs also often provide teachers, administrators, and parents with information they can use to support students' career exploration and postsecondary educational opportunities.
Talking to experts, we have their notions of the impact of Counseling in the minds of children and also the positive ways of pursuing a good career.
Ganesh Kohli, the Chair of IC3 Conference 2017 said,” Counseling plays a major role in the happiness quotient of people. If you end up making wrong decisions and end up studying at a place which is not the right place for you, you are bound to be unhappier with time. So, Counseling has a huge role and as I always say, ‘Counseling is as important as teaching Math, English or Physics. It is significant and has a profound impact over many years in the life of young people.”
“Indian students have not been able to gain preference in comparison to the overseas students due to lack of exposure and right counseling at the right age. We really need to step up the counseling practices in India to help them gain the desired position in the international markets”, said Ganesh Kohli
On the other hand we have Ragh Singh, Assistant Director, University of Missouri, who talked about his experience in India and the West.” Depending on the student’s interest, the most important part for us is to look for the best fit. It is to make sure that they the students go to the schools which are the best fit for them. Our university is emphasizing more on having a pretty substantial population of graduate students from India. But now we are planning to have an even more population of undergraduate students coming from India.”
Sudarshana Shukla, Guidance Counselor, The Cathedral & John Connon School, shared the benefits of Counseling in making decisions to choose the right stream or career choice with the available opportunities. We are trying to build our perspective on some of our programs that the University of Columbia can offer to these students. To conclude, the crux of career counseling is to provide the necessary guidance that would help the student in making the right choice regarding their career.
“There is a curiosity among the students in getting hold of the available options. Considering the financial background and the spending capacity of the parents, the students are guided accordingly in determining the right choice from the available options, rather than show them a dram and snatch it away. With the available opportunities for scholarships, and depending on the merit of the student, we work with the students and the parents together to be able to give them a good cross section of colleges within or outside the country. We keep in mind whether the return in investment is worth it or not”, said the Guidance Counselor, AP Coordinator Head of Learning Resource Centre, The Cathedral & John Connon School,
