With the rise of women entrepreneurs in India, a growing number of mothers are also finding their calling as entrepreneurs
For any woman in this world, motherhood is a beautiful feeling. Raising a child is not a cakewalk and it becomes an even bigger juggling act when you are a mompreneur.
Long gone are the days when women were expected to focus only on raising their children and forget about work or business. Now, women have adorned the super-mom cap quite literally. There has been a significant increase in the number of mompreneurs in the industry, who are doing extraordinarily well in both the managing households as well as businesses.
Pallavi Rao Chaturvedi, Executive Vice President, AISECT Group, said, “With the rise of women entrepreneurs in India, a growing number of mothers are also finding their calling as entrepreneurs. There was a time when women had to choose between being a mother and pursuing her ambitions. Today, women are realising that the qualities that make them a good mother often also enable them to handle their business ventures effectively. Mompreneurs not only bring a new perspective to a business problem but their ability to efficiently juggle between multiple tasks makes them an asset to India’s budding start-up ecosystem.”
Running a successful business is an extremely difficult task, and it can be even more strenuous if you a parent. Here are some useful tips to become a successful mompreneur and reduce some of the stress of being a mother and entrepreneur.
Have a Flexible Plan
It can’t be stressed enough that planning is important for every business. It becomes even more essential for a mompreneur to plan ahead. You need to work out on how you are going to spend your time. Here are some of the following commitments that you need to devote your time to: marketing, writing and replying to emails, finances, social media management, and so on. and also manage your household. Make sure your plan is flexible so that if anything comes up, you can deal with it.
“In order to handle situations better, it is important to plan and prioritise ahead of time. Proper planning can go a long way in helping you utilise your time in an efficient way and keep things in balance,” says Pallavi.
Don’t Put too much Pressure on yourself
We understand that being a mompreneur is gruelling, but putting a whole lot of pressure on yourself is no good either. There will be days when mom priorities will overtake work priorities and days when work priorities overtake mom priorities and that's ok. You don’t have to be perfect at all times.
“It is important to learn to integrate your responsibilities of being a mother and an entrepreneur since both of them are indispensable. You need to accept that you can’t perfect every aspect of your life,” added Pallavi.
Mehak Sagar Shahani, co-founder, WedMeGood, said, “It’s the hardest thing I’ve did but I’ve realised we put too much pressure on ourselves to be perfect. We want to be 10/10 moms and 10/10 entrepreneurs and 10/10 in our personal life. It's exhausting and impossible. We have to at the end of the day, just try our best at whatever we do and leave it at that.”
Set up a Strong Support System
No matter how much you try, you can’t do everything alone. “As a mother, the most difficult challenge I have faced is mom guilt, the fact that you have to be away for so long,” said, Mehak.
Thus, it is important to ensure that you have supportive people who are willing and able to help when you need it. Whether it is your spouse, friends or relatives, all of them contribute to your success as a mompreneur.
“There will be times when you’ll be overburdened with work and feel guilty about not being a good mother; in those times don’t be afraid to ask your family for support,” asserted, Pallavi.
