“Automation” in Meeting the Demands by New Age E-commerce Boom

The demands of the new age consumer are to place an order at the touch of the button and get it delivered to them as soon as possible. The needs are increasing, the demands are increasing, which is causing the evolution of technology to meet the demands and fulfill the needs of the consumers.

GreyOrange is a multinational technology company that designs, manufactures and deploys advanced robotics systems for automation in distribution and fulfillment centers, was founded in 2011. Headquartered in Singapore the brand has its offices in India, Japan, Germany, USA and three state-of-the-art research and development centers in India, USA and Singapore.

Through the use of flexible automation and the power of AI, GreyOrange recognizes the business needs, optimizes the supply chain and enhances process efficiency.

In an interaction with Vivekanand, Country Manager, India and SAARC, GreyOrange, we found out how a shift in consumer demands results in the evolution of technology to help the retailers and logistic industries face their challenges and complexities.

Common challenges and complexities faced by the retailers and logistics businesses

Vivekanand says, “Today’s modern supply chains face immense pressure to improve productivity as businesses grapple with unpredictable demand due to seasonality or trends, intense competition and labor shortages (trained or skilled for specific supply chain processes) to handle Omni-channel distribution.  As supply chain complexities increase, functions such as inventory management, from inventory storage, replenishment, picking to shipping orders, become key to ensure that the right products are available in stock and get to the end consumer on time.

“Further, the unprecedented growth in e-commerce volumes combined with peak demand volatility during certain seasons; create situations where businesses find it increasingly difficult to predict future demand and plan for it. These then directly affect the delivery times, the accuracy of the orders and the consumer’s experience, which impacts on their revenues and margins.

“Traditional methods and operations fail to deliver on these requirements for higher speed, accuracy and efficiency, and often even increase the chances for error and higher costs. Thus, automation becomes the need of the hour. This is why many retailers and logistics players are now taking routes such as automation and robotics, to make their supply chains faster and more efficient so that they don’t lose out on their loyal consumer base.”

Automation in Supply Chains

He adds, “The global e-commerce boom is placing enormous pressures on supply chains. Consumer preferences are fast shifting from next day delivery to same day delivery, and in some cities, consumers are even looking for 4 or 2-hour delivery. With these expectations becoming more rampant, e-commerce businesses are compelled to upgrade their supply chains with some degree of automation as they race to accelerate their order fulfillment processes and provide faster delivery. Moreover, retailers which earlier operated through stores only are today under immense pressure to get online to provide an Omni-channel experience to their consumers.

“Supply chain and logistics continue to evolve to keep pace with these new demands generated by the e-commerce boom. This growth of online shopping, plus new consumption patterns have impacted warehousing and transformed the industry. Technologies such as AI and robotics automation are being deployed to maintain competitive advantage and efficiently operate in a volatile environment, handling millions of parcels to be shipped every day directly to the online shopper or to the stores for ‘click and collect’ orders.”
