Uday Kumar Varma has been appointed as the new Secretary in the Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. Prior to this appointment Uday Kumar Varma was a Special Secretary in the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting.
He replaced Dinesh Rai, who retired as Secretary, Ministry of MSME on August 31, 2010. Mr Uday Kumar Varma, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1976 batch (Madhya Pradesh cadre), has served as the District Magistrate and Collector in three districts of Madhya Pradesh – Panna, Mandla and Bilaspur, and held posts of Director, Handlooms and textiles, Industries Commissioner, Commissioner, Women & Child Development, Tribal Commissioner and Health Commissioner in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
In the Central Government, he has held posts at various levels. He has been the Private Secretary to Union Ministers, and also the Deputy Secretary/Director in the Ministries of Rural Development and Human Resource Development. He has served as the Joint Secretary in Labour Ministry and as an Additional Secretary and Special Secretary in the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, since November 2009.
Mr Varma has a B.Sc. (Hons.) degree from the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi and a Master's in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, United States. He also has a post-graduate diploma in French language.
The former MSME secretary has now taken over as the Chairman of the newly formed Warehousing Development and Regulatory Authority (WDRA), which has been set up as a regulatory body for warehouses in the country.
